how do I get my DAW to see an external drive

I have an external drive connected to my DAW.  At one point I had it configured and it ran just fine. Now for some reason Windows does not see it.

If I open my Device Manager it is listed under drives. If I highlight it and open the properties page it tells me that it is operating normally and that it is enabled....

However If I try to find it any other way windows does not see it...

I have tried to add it using the "Add Hardware Wizard" but no luck......

I have tried to reinstall the drivers....no luck

I have tried to trouble shoot it ....no luck...

I am at a loss at how to get windows to see this drive so I can use it...I have some saved information on it that I do not want to lose and / or access.....

any one know how I can do this?

Thank You.

hey, Cliff, what do you mean by "If I try to find it any other way windows does not see it..."

can you select it in windows explorer?  can you open it and see files? or is this what you're saying you can't do?

Does it show in my computer?
if it's not there then it's gone off line.
Drivers? normally never needed. plug and play.
    Windows trouble shooting rarely woks.
did you change the usb port it was using. I find it pays to always use the same ports for a usb devise.
does the drive work on another computer?

Your post doesn't actually imply this has got something to do with it, but...

Note, that an external firewire HDD can't be hot launched. It has to be connected and switched on when you open your PC. Otherwise you need to restart.

Only USB HDDs are hot connectable.

How about does it show in:

Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Computer management
    [-] Storage -> Disk management

There you can assign it a drive letter if it looks OK.

No it does not show in my computer.

Going off line is exactly what I think it has done....!!!

Have already tried to replace the drivers....do not accomplish this sucessfully....

You are correct, Windows trouble shoot was useles in this case

Come to think of it I might have unplugged it from the firewire port in the back and then replugged it back in and that is when it stopped working.... so I do not have it on a usb hub at all...

I have tried it on three other computers and no it has not worked on any of them...

it does not show at all..........

It only shows up in device manager.....no where else...that is what is so frustrating for me.....

when I first got the drive it showed up there and I was able to format it for use there and it worked because I was able to store files there as well but not now....nothing...

I'm afraid that means your drive has a problem.  very likely this will be an electronics problem with the "board" on the drive.

Not necessarily, it may be assigned a drive letter that is already assigned to another drive.
If you can see it in Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Management, right click on it and change the drive letter.
That might take care of it.
I had a similar problem when I plugged in an external hd to my laptop and both the external hd and sd card reader were vying for the same drive letter.

edit: Never mind, just noticed that this was suggested already.

Have you tried removing the hard drive from the enclosure and trying it internally or in another enclosure?

I was hoping that was not going to be the case....
this is a seagate drive....so I do not know if this will be easy or hard? Will I have to send it to seagate to fix or can my local worst buy do the repair?

cliff - I had responded with a long post and the forum server crashed when I posted it!

bottom line - seagate has been having problems with 1TB+ drives, if that's what you have then you can probably get a replacement, but don't look for them to return your data on this drive!

data recovery from a drive can be very expensive - usually the cheapest is $300 and it goes up to $1k-$2k depending on the type of failure.

all of my original songs i recorded with SHS when I first started are on a hard drive that I don't want to spend $1k to recover.

that is exactly what I have....a 1 TB Seagate......so I guess i am going to have to contact them and see if I can get it replaced....

well your right about the info on it I am not paying that kind of money for recovery.....I have not missed it so I guess I do not need it.....

Did you check that your firewire is working correctly?  You might want to uninstall that driver reboot and reinstall the driver when Windows "finds new hardware".  Good luck.

Cliff... I had a similar problem on my new DAW build. I had 2 SATA drives... the computer saw both but my 1TB was not accessible. I ended up calling the mfg and their tech dept talked me through a simple procedure to make it a workable storage drive. It was a settings issue for that drive.

I don't recall what they told me....

A USB drive should work in plug and play mode. Does the drive work on other computers?
