The delay is called latency. You can adjust it by hitting 'p' to bring up preferences. Find the latency tab and experiment with ASIO as well as WDM drivers. Then see how low you can move the slider down. The lower it is, the lower the latency or delay. See which one gives you the lowest latency at which you can play back your song without it crackling or dropping out.
If this doesn't get you far enough, your computer and soundcard may not be up to spec. What are the specifications of your computer and soundcard? Most modern computers should be powerful enough to get useable results so it is hopefully just a matter of adjusting your latency. I tend to like around 5ms latency for guitar stuff. Keep in mind that the more CPU intensive VSTs you have running (or any other type of plug), the harder your computer has to work, and the greater you must set the latency value so it continues to run smoothly without glitches.
