how do I use the metronome with my guitar to decide on a drum beat
hello Forgive my asking, but how do i use the metronome in MC5? I want to strum my song on my guitar and use the metronome to decide on which SI drum patch and so decide on a tempo to use. How do i know which BPM to use when setting the metronome? do i strum away and try and count each beat until the second hand of a clock goes full circle, or is there an easier way of doing it? i dont have a drum machine or midi gear. thanks again jason

turn the metronome on. F1 gets you to the help menu. MC has a built in metronome..... i never use the built in metronome. i prefer to make my own. My website (Music page) has the info on how to set up TTS to provide (IMHO) a much better sounding metronome or...timing track using snare and kick drum sounds. Build your own takes a few seconds longer then turning on the built in, but to me it's easier to hear and it sounds better. info is here Here's my recommendation.... play the song and get comfortable with the speed where it sounds perfect. Now..... set the project's BPM to a speed that is close to that. Play along with the drum/metronome. Adjust the BPM of the project as needed to hit that perfect tempo to give the song the feel you want. Unless there is a reason.....don't bother with the math and stopwatch method.

You just 'play the song in your head' while tapping the tempo button with your mouse. You won't get a steady tempo, it will change every time you click the mouse, but it will give you a general idea of what the tempo is for your song. I like round numbers, so if it ends up at a tempo of 133:642, I'll round up or down to 134 or 133.

i tend to pick numbers that divide evenly by 5.

For what free advice is worth, I think that you will have a better experience learning how to do initial project setup if you take the time to learn how to make a simple two bar grove clip with just a snare and a kick drum. Then use this grove clip instead of a metronome. I find that it is much eadier to follow drums and stay in time than it is to listen for a click-click-ckick. I don't have to concentrate on a drum beat, but I do to hear and follow clicks. There are good examples in the turotial on how to make these clips and then stretch them out to fill the time length of your project. Having a clip with a measure or rimshots for a lead-in is pretty handy as well. I think that if you take some time now to learn how to do this it will make the whole recording process much easier for you down the road.

+1 That is exactly what I do, and the MIDI groove clip will change speed if you change the tempo. Audio won't, though, so if you record audio to the groove clip and decide that the tempo is wrong for you, you'll need to re-record the audio part to the new tempo.
