how do i create a rex file or some functional equivalent?

i want to be able to cut up a sample or looop into individual,  triggerable sample, like in RX0, but i want to be able to make my own as opposed to just using what is in the given libraries.   other than recycle, how is this done?

Pretty sure you have to use Recycle to create rex files.

inaheartbat is correct; SONAR can use REX files, but it can't create them. The only way to trigger parts of a loop without using REX is to split it up, either manually, or using Audiosnap, and drop the slices into a sample player like Dropzone, SD3, the Matrix or a 3rd-party sampler. Or maybe create an SFZ file for use with an SFZ Player.

i just looked it up:  it costs $250!!!!!     thats crazy.           i cannot believe that there is only one app that makes rex files and it costs $250.       im gonna try dicing a sample with audio snap and see how that goes.       any words of advice or caution?

ReCycle is a bit cheaper than $250. I got it 3 years ago for under $200 at Guitar Center. That being said and I just had this conversation with my class last night (we're learning ReCycle & Reason), it's too much to pay for a piece of software that doesn't do much other than create rex files and hasn't been updated in I don't know how long. I do like the flexibility you get with rex files, but Propellerheads needs to ReVisit (sorry...bad pun) ReCycle.

MAZ sound makes a very decent sampler called VSampler.  it actually shipped with Sonar 6 i believe.  it has funtionality to edit a sample and assign each part to a midi note that you can trigger from your keyboard or drum controller.  Used it exclusively for years before taking the recyle plunge.  You can even assign the samples to a range of keys to create pitch/time changes.  Just check it the price currently is only $129.00.  unless you have an old Sonar 6 laying around.

Most solutions will cost something;  however, there are some free and/or inexpensive solutions out there but they are not really "rex" standard.    That doesn't matter as long as you have a way to manage and trigger the slices.

Slices is the key word.  Look around the net for "slicers".   Rex is, basically, just a bunch of slices that are auto-assigned to notes for easy triggering.   This can be done by means other than Reason, etc.

For example -- NI's Maschine has a built-in slicing function.   It works extremely well.   This is a bit expensive for some.

But other samplers and 3rd party plugins do slicing just as well and can be triggered in various ways (like via your keyboard, or pads, etc).

So I suggest just searching around for slicers.   Image-Line (Fruity Loops maker) has one or two; other good vendors do as well.

The problem I ran into was in using Spectrasonics Stylus RMX they say you can import your own sounds by creating a rex file. I found that depressing since I (like many of you) find the thought of having to buy ReCycle just to create rex files a complete waste of money. So, while they may claim that is a feature it is useless for the great majority of people that do not own that software. Perhaps at some point they will address this issue.

While not directly applicable to the OP's original question/issue it is something worth pondering I thought. I went through the same fruitless search for a rex converter and only ReCycle is out there. Plenty of readers but Propellerhead specifically states they will not license the writer.

    +1

Recycle proprietary technology and well overpriced now for what it is.

Being as you can loop samples in numerous apps and in numerous ways these day Props are going to have to set Recycle free before too long else it nobody is going to care about rex as being a worthwhile format for much longer even if they still do.

We have a video on CakeTV  that outlines how to slice and sample with AudioSnap ...

the ONLY thing that will generate rex/rx2 is recycle.. I've had it for years.. it was amazing compared to using an akai screen.. SERIOUSLY if you've not chopped loops on an s950 / 1000 then it's FAR quicker.  BUT that was back in the day, and things have moved on.

it needs to evolve, e.g. batch mode and a full audio editor to rival others.. but instead props waste their time on record. [/rant]

    http://tx16wx.blogspot.com/

is a free sampler that'll do loop slices, but kontakt has great beat slicing. also have a look at things like guru.. .TBH maschine is "ok" but a big price.

Seth it's "ok" to a point.. but if your one for choppage, (dunno how much drum loop based stuff you make) and a bit old school (atari ST / akai) and use MIDI instead of audio for chops,  it don't cut the mustard and 3rd party tools area REALLY needed
(and I don't expect cake to include it or any other maker as it's too much of an "ask") .

take 2 loops of "roughly" the same BPM in RXP.. drag / drop the midi.. and cut the low end off 1 and only keep the kick / snare of the other. because the slices are well locked, it's easy to turn a 4 bar loops of a rx2 into 16 bars of variations (providing it's got all the drums hits sliced up)

people may do the same in audio , but to me it's far easier to do the same with the midi notation of the rx2.

I'm in the same situation, where I use and love Stylus RMX but importing seems to work best with REX2 and I would love to make my own loops for it.

On the other hand, every one who makes/sells loops usually has them available in Rex2. http://www.loopmasters.com has an incredible assortment of loops, and http://www.ninevoltaudio.com is another one I go to.

I was curious if anyone had figured out how to make rx2 with Cakewalks tools or plug-ins or a converter to rx2 or rmx from NI sample slices.

    Any leads on this appreciated.
