Can you re-phrase the question? Are you talking about the track view or the console view?

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

ok i will try to explain what i am trying to do.
i have a midi file that has 8 tracks each track is a different instrument, i have a yamaha keyboard that lets you insert midi files into it and you can learn to play the song using the left hand and right hand, now the thing is the left hand uses the instrument in track one, the right hand plays the main notes which should be on track two, but the midi  song i have has the main piano on track 4, so i need to move track 4 to track 2 so i can use it for learning for my right hand, the theory is track 1 should be cords for left hand and track 2 is your main notes for your right hand, a lot of midis i have are not set up with the instrument/notes set as channel or track 1 and 2.

does that make sense, just need to reorder the tracks/channels.

you have to change the MIDI channel.  the MIDI file specification means it will save in channel order.

You just drag track 4 up and drop it under track 1. That won't change the channel # though.

apparently I wasn't clear enough for you.

Change the CHANNEL in the TRACK PROPERTIES to the place you want your track to be and then move the track to the place you want it to be, then save as MIDI and when you reopen it will be in the new location.

MIDI tracks are easy to manipulate into any instrument sound or channel you wish.  Tracks and Channels are 2 different things. You can have 16 tracks  playing one channel or one track playing all 16 channels. You can also have one channel that changes sounds ( patches)  every second. The combination's are endless.  As Beagle has pointed out, open the track properties from the right click dialog box and enter the channel and patch you want.
Mute or delete any unwanted tracks. Downloaded MIDI files sometimes contain a lot of cr-p you don't need. Like doubled parts and very bad vocal parts played by wheezy sounds.

    [small correction to johnnyV's statement]

Thanks Beagle- I usually proof my intstructions by stepping through actions but was to lazy to open Sonar this time. It's funny how many actions we routinely perform without clearly registering them in our little brains. Then there's the exact spot you need to click on too. I call it the larger gray spot. I imagine there is also a hot key.
