how do you guys making an arp. pattern within Sonar

Hi,

I just wonder how you guys make an arp pattern within Sonar environment ? Will ya do it within Piano view?

pls share your idea.

Thanks!

I Rewire Project 5's awesome arpeggiator, or use the synth's own arpeggiation functions. Sonar is not great for creating arpeggios on it's own, unless I have been missing something for a long time... But you could presumably do it manually in piano view, or use your controller to "play" the arpeggio live then quantize/transpose/loop it...

An arpeggiator is available in sonar... on a midi track have a look at the midi fx available.

If you've got S7, I'd start with the Step Sequencer. Roll your own.

All of the suggestions given so far are good. I spent some time looking for a free but good arpeggiator, but I didn't find it. If you go to www.kvraudio.com, you can search for arpeggiators and step sequencers. You will find things like hypercyclic, which won second place in last year's developer contest. There is also Arpocalypse. You can visit www.midiplugins.com and try out the arpeggiators. Z3ta+, of course, has its own arps, and many other synths do, as well. If you have the time and interest, creating your own arp with the S7 Step Sequencer is probably the best way to go.

Here's where the problems begin with interpreting the question.

You can construct an an arpeggiated sequence of notes in almost any View: the PRV, Step Sequencer, Staff, Event, or the often-overlooked Transport -> Step Record. You can input notes from mouse or keyboard, and use the Process menu to fine tune the note sequence. It can sound like it was done by an arpeggiator, but the note sequence is fixed, and won't vary on note input or arpeggiator algorithm.

A true arpeggiator uses an entirely different process, and the results change over time. Sonar's MFX Arpeggiator has the bare basics: Up / Down, and a couple of rhythmic variations. Project5's arpeggiator (also mentioned above) is very configurable, and can take advantage of virtual cabling to 'print' the output to MIDI in Sonar. That one is hard to beat for ease-of-use while still offering depth of programming.

Mose mentioned Mucoder's Hypercyclic above. Now there's a freebie solution with some deep potential. In Sonar, load it as a VST, and Enable MIDI Output in the Synth Rack View. Then use the (newly-created) Hypercyclic MIDI inputs on any other synth. It's not as straightforward for choosing a 'standard' algorithm, but there are a couple dozen presets to get you started.

Because it's a MIDI-VST, it generates note values & patterns that can be edited to taste after recording.

From SONAR 7 Power! On pages 521-523, it discusses Automatic Arpeggios using MIDI Effects.

Choose Process>MIDI fx > Cakewalk FX > Arpeggiator to open the Arpeggiator dialog box.

Set the Swing parameter (Scott recommends 0 percent)

Set Rate and Units Parameters. (Rate determines amt. of time between each note / Units determines what units to set Rate) Rate can be set to notes, ticks, or milliseconds. Setting Units to "Notes" you can sync. notes to certain note value to play in sync with rest of music.

Let Legago to determine duration of notes. Each note plays until start of next note in arpeggio.

Set Path. Determines direction of notes.

Set Play Through for original data to remain intact and play along with arpeggio. If deactivated, only arpeggio data will remain.

Set Output option/parameters. If activated, additional notes will be added to arpeggio so it plays smoothly over each octave in rage specified. Otherwise, only original specified notes will be played.

Set Chord option/parameters. IF activated, original data will be analyzed to a specified range and then guess at what chord is playing. If used in real-time, the name of the chord guessed will be shown in the "Recognized Chord" field. This effect uses regognized chord to create the notes for arpeggio.

    Click OK.

That's all I have, and sorry for the truncation of actual text, but I don't feel like typing. Also forgive me if everyone knows all of this. I would also suggest reading up in the Help file if you're really interested in this process.
