how do you reduce the volume of part of an audio track?
hello, i have a spike in audio on part of a track. in audacity you simply mouse-drag over the wave form blob, reduce the volume by 3db in the amplify dropdown menu, and you are done how on earth do you drag-select over an audio waveform track i sonar? every time i try to do this it selects the whole track. then the green marker line tries to get involved in the game. i try to drag over the region, and it moves the whole track. very frustrating. thanks for any info on this.

Use a volume envelope. See envelopes in the Help menu for instructions.

the only way to do this is with a 4 point volume line edit? i don't have time for that. i need to be able to perform this operation in 10 seconds with a minimum of hassle. i'm not creating the next dark side of the moon. i need to work in almost real-time speed.

Turn off 'Snap To Grid' and drag the cursor along the timeline at the top of the Track View (after selecting that particular track) to highlight whatever is too loud. Then there's an option in either Edit or Process to reduce the gain destructively. i don't understand some people's need to rush. Quality albums (not even close to DSOTM) used to take time to make, but now a 4-point edit is too much...

Can you set the track to "W" and then let the track play, then use the volume control to move it up or down?

forget volume envelopes for editing. use clip envelopes. then you can still dittle with your volume on the track. and, there is a right clik command that creates the 4 points for you in one clik. all done in under 10 seconds.

If you have Audacity installed it should show under the "tools" menu. Highlight the track, go to tools and it will open the track in Audacity and you will now have a proper wave editor. When you are finished , save it and return to Sonar and it will ask if you want to reload the file. I use Wave Lab on almost every audio track. My one negative with Sonar is it's pour wave editing. But this method gives you the best of both worlds and it doesn't take to many mouse clicks or time. Just don't forget to Save first before returning to Sonar.

right - sonar is not a "wave editor" it's a sequencer. audacity is a wave editor and can be used from inside sonar like cactus music describes

timidi and, there is a right clik command that creates the 4 points for you in one clik. all done in under 10 seconds. I use clip envelopes a lot, but I didn't know that Timothy, thanks for the heads up.
