how many folks plan on buying the latest version of Sonar....
and just taking their box off the grid, and rolling with it? if so, why? if not, why not? i'm talking a brand new build, what would you do now? i got Sonar 6 Pro in 2010, loaded it on a PC with only 2 gig of ram, Win XP, got it totally dialed in, and that's the rig i'm still using today. never updated the software, never updated the O/s, and it's been the most stable DAW that anyone i know, has. why not do it again? (((CLARIFICATION ITEM: i am going to build a brand new PC dedicated to DAW, to replace my old unit. i have already previously set the date to build it at Dec 1 2017, this was before the cakewalk dilemma came up. so, brand new build, i have to load some new DAW on it........)))

Hi Bats that's exactly what I am going to do - I still have on my system an XPC Computer running Xp that I bought in 2004 - so why cant I just keep what I have now, which is a pretty powerful Computer from Jim at Studio Cat - its running windows 7 very happily, so until something breaks hardware wise should be good! Hey Bat, you could always upgrade to 8:5:3(with some difficulty),absolutely glitchfree and more than adequate for tracking and basic mixing. combined with Mixbuss it`s all you need IMHO. but, after listening to your recordings,it`s obvious that it`s the operator not the tool that matters. cheers

I've had my computer offline for 16 years, and although inconvenient sometimes, it was never a problem. The thing with Splat though, is that when you do a fresh install, you have to generate an,authorization request file, take that to an online computer, upload it on the Cakewalk sight, and then it generates a response code. Even though I saved these response codes, they don't seem to work the next time you do a fresh install. YMMV.

As of now, the store is closed and Noel's announcement comes up whenever you click on a link that would bring you to the store. It really is the end, isn't it? :(

I did exactly what Bats mentioned in his opening post , except I did it in 2006 and ran SONAR 6 PE under XP until 3 1/2 years ago . I was happy through out that whole time .When I finally got a Win 8 computer and went w X3 PE I found myself in a whole world of SONAR learning curve hurt ....looking back on that phase , I think one of the things that got me through that whole experience was people here on the forum helped me learn the software ... Then when I got SPlat I had gotten a little more used to the learning curve ...Admittedly I did not like all of the updates because it screwed around way to much with my workflow .... I went out and bought 6 other competing DAW's that are every bit as good as SONAR because I didn't like the idea that some of the developers at Cakewalk were designing things in a DAW that I didn't feel was relevant to my particular workflow .. When I play my guitar it's a right handed guitar , when I'm done playing it , I put it in the case , When I go to play it again I do not appreciate that someone decided to change it over to a Lefty that's what some of the SONAR updates did to my work flow ... As far as the OP's original question / statement ...if it was me I would put 6 PE on my brand new computer only because it 64 bit and it is a know workflow ...Then I would take it from there .... if you could score SONAR SPlat you would probably be in the same boat as every other one of us ...it is pretty awesome and it will probably run for years ..the main disadvantage I can see is you have had plenty of time to have made the switch from SONAR 6 to SPlat or what ever ..your reasons for doing so are probably personal and make perfect sense to you , so I will accept that for what it is IMHO the biggest disadvantage to upgrading SONAR in your case may be that there may no longer be the type of help SONAR users have gotten for years on this forum ...once the forum goes bye bye all that collective user knowledge that we have had for years may only turn out to be Dust in The Wind Kenny

My version of SPlat is now a year out of date, and on a PC that's off the network. I have no intention of updating it because I like what i've got now. The current version is great, and if I wasn't happy I'd probably update it to the newest (especially with Black Friday deals from 3rd party vendors) and run with that for a few years. Also, last night I downloaded all My Products and relevant codes. Next time I replace my PC, hopefully I'll have few hiccups.

I'm still running SONAR Home Studio 6 XL. fully patched, on a 12-year-old XP machine. If the computer breaks, I have X3 on this machine, fully patched. All I would need is an audio interface for it. X3 is a lot different than 6 XL, but I suppose I could get used to it.

Hi Paulo, Apologies for butting in, but I also took a while to set up my Bandcamp page. I actually like it and I find it is a good place to publish finished albums. Whereas I use SoundCloud as a dumping ground for every damn POS I make. You still have to drive people there, though, as there isn't any kind of community over there. cheers andy

Thanks for the info. I've never actually bothered to compile what one might call an album, so there's that to consider. It was more the feedback side of things than trying to sell stuff that I was interested in tbh, so I guess it's not really the right place for me.

No, definitely not a great place for feedback. SoundCloud is best for that but you also have to put up with a lot of spam and crap. And then of course there are places like the Songs forum here, of course.

I've a soundcloud page for years but I've never really taken to it - it seemed to me that most people who wanted to "follow" you were only really after you returning the favour so that they could amass more "followers". I also never found out how to re-order or take stuff down altogether and then there's the spam and such......... I used to be quite active in the songs forum here, but it took a turn for the worse (IMO) some time ago and has never really recovered from that. I just can't be doing with the pissing contests, fragile egos and most of all the constant tactical bumping of threads. Each to their own, but it ruined it for me which was a shame because there were some very talented folk that mostly became buried but the tacticians and moved on.

I must be naïve I suppose, but I've never been aware of this 'tactical bumping' thing, which has been mentioned elsewhere. I see people replying to comments and thanking the poster for them, but I don't see *much out and out 'bumping' of threads to get a song to the top of the page. If your tune doesn't get commented on, it soon sinks to page 2. Then again, perhaps I'm just being 'coy'... *Edited to include the word 'much' because there are a couple of people who do that.

I've never considered you personally to be either naïve or coy and I like to think that you know that I have respect for both your musical ability and what I perceive to be your qualities as a human being, but if it's not tactical bumping, what else do you call it when people, for example, have several replies to their thread but only acknowledge the first one and ignore the ones below it and then only acknowledge the next one once their thread has dropped down the page a bit and still ignore the others, then acknowledge the next on only once they have dropped down the page a bit again and so on ? Or the timely comments from their mates that have sod all to do with the track posted or any of the other comments made in the thread, or the time that finally did it for me when one person pushed about 15 of their own previous threads to the top of page 1, thus pushing many others on to the page 2 of death ? (None of which were mine so it's not like it affected me personally) but it was just totally indicative of the selfish attitude that seemed to prevail at the time and which has continued to some extent ever since. Anyway, let's not hijack the thread any more. WRT the OP - it would be kind of ironic if lots of people now bought the last version for this reason as if they had all been sufficiently concerned about losing their precious DAW to have bought it in the first place the situation may not have arisen.
