how to create a bit/sample breakdown effect ?

i want to create the effect of a reverbed wash breaking down granularly (like a bit/sample rate breakdown- for lack of better description). any ideas on how to achieve this effect in sonar x1 ? to be clear: i have a part that is a big reverb wash with a long tail. i want it to breakup granularly (also for lack of better descriptive), as it decays.

Automate an eq on the verb bus to simulate lesser quality. For example, there are presets in most eq's that offer an am radio preset. Automate the level or frequencies of the eq to degrade the quality of the verb.

Sample rate breakdown is pretty much a filtering effect. For example, if you have the Waves eq's, they have presets that simulate a 56k mp3 file filter type sound. Something like this would work wonders for you. Or, clone the track and mess around with changing your bit and sample rate so that you can hear the effects of this and try to cop the tone you get from it using an eq so you can automate it to work for you. That's how I'd do it. Hope this helps...good luck.

i found a freeware vst effect called 'bitcrusher' - i googled it. using automation as danny suggested, with this effect, gets me 90% there. though, what i am really trying to achieve is the reverb wash actually morphing into this reduced audio quality created by the bit crusher. i can't figure how to do this. what would be great is to have the bit crusher on the reverb wash's output and automate the bit crushers' level to rise as the reverb decay occurs..

Can I ask, what is preventing you from doing exactly this?

I would need to be able to automate the bit crushers' controls. is this possible? I can't figure it out.

That bit-reduction effect is like fingernails on a chalkboard to me, so I've never used it. But I understand that AliasFactor is such a "bitcrusher" plugin, and I just checked and its Mix parameter can be automated.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

i tried the alias factor but i couldn't get the sound i was after. i will try again, as i didnt mess with it enough. maybe some more tweaking will do. thanks bitflipper
