The only other option, and I've never tried this so it might or might not work. You could record your overdubs with track layers enabled, then when you've finished, drag the layers out into their own clips further down the timeline. Then delete the original layers contained in the first clip

You could drop the rhythm loop into the Matrix, get it looping there and then record as usual.

If i understand you correctly you should be able too click on the clip to select and hit control-L which will turn the clip into a loop which you can drag out as far as you need. Just make sure the clip is is trimmed to an even about of bars.

As has been pointed out, SONAR can do this in numerous ways, and just as efficiently as your Yamaha workstation. It's just a different working paradigm. Chrisma's solution (Groove Clip Looping) is probably the easiest, most conventional, and sensible way of doing it. This is really what your Yamaha is doing "under the hood"; it's just not presented that way.

Mattox 82's solution is more convenient if you want to experiment with a lot of different loops individually or combined.

I've used Jonesey's solution in a pinch when I accidentally loop-recorded MIDI. If you loop-record audio, you can actually import the audio from your audio folder, and it will import as a linear track. SONAR just presents it as looped takes in the original layered track.

This kind of flexibility is one of SONAR's strengths. there are many ways to skin any given cat.
