how to remove white noise from vocal clip?
got that audio clip with a song and need to be cleaned up, any plugin, tool good to do that?

There are noise removers, if you have a clip of the offending sound. Soundforge has one - it is a de-sampler in essence. But the nosie has to be steady state.

I think Audacity has a noise remover too, one that can be "taught" to eliminate a certain noise.

I have also heard of the old trick (though I have never tried it) of creating a track of just the white noise, flip the phase on the track and supposedly it cancels the other track's white noise out. Has anyone ever tried this?

Using phase cancellation to your advantage. Pretty cool trick, if and when it works out. Worth giving it a try when needed. Thanks for the tip.

If you do decide to use a dedicated noise removal plug in or process it's often times a good idea to do several light passes rather than one big cut.
You can sometimes get good noise reduction and a more natural sound by doing the multiple passes.

to remove noise, the cycles would have to be exact, then and only then can you flip them 180 and have them cancel. recording another white noise track and flipping it will NOT work because the cycles are not exactly lined up.
My advice:
1. try to get a better recording with no noise to start with. find the source of the noise in the studio or gear and eliminate it.
2. use surgical envelopes or {process audio mute} to remove the noise between the vocals. If it's a song track or something like a piano track, obviously, that is not going to work well. I use this method {PAM} to clean up the silence between vox phrases.

I agree with Herb... and of course think what has been explained was embedded in the descriptive word "noise".

thanks for tips, the noise I was dealing with was from mike with sensitivity set too much, I got audio after the recording so cannot do re-record. There was few second of that noise alone before vocal kicked in so I used that to teach audacity about the noise and then it removed it quite nice, although overall signal level decreased a little bit.

When you remove the noise... you remove energy... this might be immediately apparent on the meters... and of course you hear the difference even if you don't think much about the idea that in a way you were turning down the over all volume.
I like to use the FFT noise filters in Adobe Audition. I imagine Audacity's work in the same way. It's real good to have experience with those filters.
I send a lot of field audio in to video editors and I just cross my fingers and hope someone who knows about good noise reduction will make some effort to help during editing.
