how to set headphone as audio output?

i have both external speaker and headphone plugin with sonar 100, i had a problem that i plugin the headphone in the phone socket in sonar 100 studio, but the audio still come out from the speaker  as main output so that i can not record vocal. can someone help me how to set up the headphone in sonar 100 studio with logic9, any set up to make it work?

in addition, i want to sometimes use the speaker and sometime use headphone, how can i switch between them when i need to record vocal.
cheers

I have the same problem. As far as I can tell if you only want to use the headphones you have to unplug the main outputs form the VS-100.

    dear Rduval
i just realise that if u use logic, u need to creat a headphone mixer to make your headphone works, but don;t know how to creat it, i use logic pre-set up new project, they already set up a healphone mixer for u.

if anyone know how to create a new headphone mixer, plz tell
    cheers

I echo this.  I do a workaround by turning the amp off to my speakers when I want to just do the headphone mix, then turn the amp back on when i want to hear it out the monitors.

But it would be much nicer to have a way to kill the main outs while leaving channels 1&2 coming out the headphone jack.  It would be even nicer if I could select which outs the headphone jack is listening to, in case I want my headphones to let me hear channels 3&4 instead of just 1&2.

A similarly related idea would being able to assign which outs the DAW throughput goes to.

    Picture this;
I have my Mac set to send its system sound out the Vstudio, which means it comes out on channels 1&2.  Let's say I am working in Ableton Live and in order to use the headphones on the Vstudio as my cue, I send my main outs from live out channels 3&4, and assign my headphone cue in Live to 1&2.  Now I can cue on the headphones without the signal going to the main speakers.

....But now my Mac system sounds only show up on channels 1&2, and thus in the headphones.  If I take my headphones off I can't hear mail arrive, check a quick youtube link, have a podcast playing through itunes in the background... etc.

Someone please correct me if there is a system level place in either the sound control panel, the vstudio control panel, or the audio/midi setup where i can change the default outs the mac sends its system sound through on the vstudio, but i seem to remember it having all the controls disabled, and the control panel for the vstudio was very limited as well.

That sucks. It may also just talked me out of buying a vs100. I may eventually get a 700 next year but wanted to quickly replace my ua25. The 2 main reasons I want to replace it were:

1- having to exit sonar and flick a switch on the unit to change from 48 to44.1 etc

2- I use powered monitors and want to be able to monitor in cans or monitors alone without having to shut off my monitors.

In fact I don't see me ever wanting to hear the monitors if I have cans plugged in.

I saw a playback volume knob on the VS1oo and saw the phones out had what I thought was a seperate volume control? Apparently not. Oh well. . . .. .

The vs100 has three sets of outputs. You can plug your monitors into the second set, and have a send off your mix to the second output, which can then be muted if you want to just use just your headphones. It's easy to set up. The routing in sonar is pretty flexible, so something like this is really not a problem.

it can still be a bit of a problem as the DAW output coming from the OS (when using the vstudio as your system output) defaults to 1&2 and can not be reassigned.

I also have an issue where if I assign my main outs to 3&4, there is no volume control available aside from changing the master gain in my software.  Not ideal since my vstudio goes straight out to powered speakers with no easily accessed volume control.  So either I insert a volume atenuator in the audio chain between channels 3&4 and the amp, or I use the Playback volume control on the vstudio unit, but that only controls channels 1&2 and also can not be reassigned.

I can understand your point, and many people will likely be sending their 3&4 out from vstudio to a mixing board or something with a volume knob between the output and the speakers, but not everyone is set up this way, and it would make the unit much more flexible if users could assign which channels the headphones monitor, separate from the main outs.

So in your busses you have one buss routed to 1 and 2, on that buss you have a send going to another buss, which is set to output to 3 and 4. Now you can control the output to 3 and 4 with the fader on the vstudio, and you can also use the vstudio to mute the buss routed to 3 and 4 so you can just use the headphones.

I can understand your point, and many people will likely be sending their 3&4 out from vstudio to a mixing board or something with a volume knob between the output and the speakers, but not everyone is set up this way, and it would make the unit much more flexible if users could assign which channels the headphones monitor, separate from the main outs.
Using the method I propose, volume to the monitors is controlled via software through the vstudio, and the phones are controlled via the knob on the vstudio. It keeps all the controls in the same place.

My default project template has 4 audio tracks (2 guitar, bass and vocal), 1 Session Drummer instrument track, 4 busses (reverb, compression, Final, Monitor), and two outputs. The 5 base tracks (guitar, bass, vocal, drum) are routed to Final, the reverb and comp busses output to final, the final buss has a send to the monitor buss. Final is output to Main (output 1 and 2), Monitor is output to Monitor (output 3 and 4). All volume is controlled from the VS-100.

I ended up like this because output 1 and 2 have the raw tracks mixed in with the output from the daw, and outputs 3 and 4 are daw only. If I want to direct monitor (before the daw) I use headphones. Sometimes I play through GR3 or PodFarm, and I listen on the monitors, so I don't want the raw guitar mixed in. Output 1 and 2 always mixes the raw signal in.

the only disadvantage to controlling the volume to the monitors in the software is that it affects your master output's resolution.  So when mixing down you need to remember to turn the master back up, which can be tricky if you have mastering plugins on the master and need to be able to adjust their settings based on the master output level.

Otherwise this was how I did it before as well.  Now I have a TC Electronics Level Pilot between my vstudio out and the amp, and use 3&4 as the "main outs" in ableton which are going to the monitors.  That leaves 1&2 for headphone pre-cue monitoring, but also means that when I am done playing with sound and still want to hear the DAW output from my system (which defaults to 1&2), I have to switch the cables going to the amp from channels 3&4 to 1&2 on the back of the vstudio.  not too much of a pain, but I would rather leave the patching in place and be able to re-route the DAW through something other than 1&2, or be able to reassign the headphones to listen to something other than 1&2.

Hey, would something like this work?

    http://www.cablewholesale.com/specs/35mm-to-rca/30s1-01260.htm

Put it on output 2 and 3 and control headphone volume with Sonar.  Just a thought.  Might be a real pain, no?

I think it is silly not to have a seperate headphone volume control myself.  Thankfully my monitors are within arms length and have an on off switch on them.

Let me know what you think about that  2 x RCA Male / 1 x 3.5mm Stereo Female, Y-Cable.
