i can't hear my midi keyboard but i can see it light up on sonar's mixer

so i am using a m-audio midi sport uno usb  and have a m-audio mobile pre audio interface.  i have the audio running good.  but with midi there is no sound even though i see it light up in sonar's mixer.  it will also record the keystrokes but i can't hear any sound either during playback or recording.  i do have it armed...it is probably something simple...i am using a yamaha-p-250 as a controller/keyboard.  i figure i have most everything set-up right since i am registering on the sonar mixer and am able to record my keystrokes.  also, the midi sport is lighting when i hit the keys.

thanks.

Welcome to the forum!
Have you inserted a soft synth that produces the sounds? MIDI has no sound, it's only playing instructions.

SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre  -  Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc.
The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

insert a soft synth, route your midi track to it. when you're finished and want to convert it to audio, select both tracks and bounce to track...

these guys are correct.  I would further recommend that you work through the tutorials in the help files.  there are a couple of hands on tutorials in the help files which walk you through how to use softsynths.

If you have an external MIDI keyboard plugged into an audio interface, then:
1-Create an audio track
2-Make sure the audio track's input is the input to which your MIDI audio out is connected.  For example, if you plugged your MIDI keyboard's audio output into input #3 of your XYZ interface, make sure the audio track input at the bottom of the track strip in Inspector says XYZ3 or something similar.
3-Ensure Input echo (the blue thing) is on on both the MIDI and audio tracks.
4-When you are ready to record, arm the audio track and hit record.

When you create the audio track, the input may not default to what need.  (In my case, it always defaults to Fantom VS since I use a Roland V-Studio console and interface, and that is never what I want since I set Fantom tracks up by using the Soft Synth insert.)  The input for the audio track is small and not obvious so it is easy for this to be set wrong and not noticed, especially since it strips vowels and condenses the input name.

From the other comments above, I may not be answering what you asked but maybe this will help.  In my case, getting MIDI keyboards to work in X1 was more confusing than using exotic plug-in virtual instruments.  It isn't hard at all, but there are several things that are easy to overlook.

Beagle is right on about the tutorials, by the way.  Beagles as a breed are known for their technical expertise.

thanks for all the help and for welcoming me to the forum.  i inserted the soft synth which is what i needed to do and now i hear the keyboard.

i dont have many soft synth options - i chose true pianos - but that seems to have only one type of piano on it...do i have to buy soft synths with more instruments?  if i open cakewalk sound center for example i am stuck on the one sound...is there a way to chose within the track that i am missing so i can have the many options of strings, pianos?

cakewalk soundcenter is not just one sound - you have to use the menu in the soundcenter to filter down to the patches.  then double click on a patch and it will load.

TTS-1 is a general MIDI 2 synth.  it has 256 patches - it's also multitimbral for up to 16 channels.
