i dont get much volume from my microphone, and a lot of hissing when i record
hello sorry to keep asking questions... i am using a Sony uni-directional IMP6000 dynamic microphone into the back mic port of my soundcard. I am not getting much volume from the recordings i am doing and i am getting quite a bit of hissing that tends tom drown out the recorded sound too. Grateful for any pointers Jason

Hi Jason - you're probably not going to like the answer. you really won't be able to get a quality recording using the onboard soundcard and a "karaoke" mic. My best advice is to get a real recording soundcard and a real microphone. a good USB soundcard is usually best for starters since you can monitor directly with 0 latency and is easy to install. check my website for soundcard and mic recommendations.

thank you for your help sir. would something like this do? and would it cut out hissing, or is that happening just because i have my volume up too much?

no, please don't buy a USB mic. I'm sure user Fog is searching forum and will chastise me for saying so, but I do not recommend buying a USB mic because it is difficult to use and very likely will cause sync problems between tracks since it has a different clock than your onboard soundcard. if you'll go to my website in my signature, you'll see I say the same thing there - I do not recommend USB mics. I have other USB soundcard and regular dynamic or condensor mic recommendations in a pdf document on my website for you to check out.

I agree with Beagle.... do not buy a USB mic.... no matter what Fog says about them, they are difficult to work with. ( Beagle told me to say that) A good quality mic that you can't go wrong buying is the Gauge ECM-87. It's a low priced decent quality condensor so get an interface that has phantom power.

I'd like to reinforce Beagle's message. Buying a USB mike is really going to paint you into a corner down the road. Get a USB 'soundcard' with phantom power and a mike pre-amp. Also look for one that has an impedance matcher for doing guitar direct. I also think it is worth stretching the budget for an interface with two inputs, but if the budget is really tight a single in will work until you can afford better.

Some interfaces have nice pre-amps and some don't so be aware of that issue too. They are real handy when working with a mic.... you won't need to use a mixer as a pre.
