iG.A.S.

Ok, the scenario is: I get holliday pay, I'm heading to New York next week, I've been looking at a new very portable lap top like Macbook Air or Asus zenbook for surfing, e-mail and writing, I realized that a tablet covers what I need, I like the iPad, they are just over US$200 cheaper in the US... I have an iPhone and I am VERY satisfied with it and have many apps... Question: Do I really need an iPad? But more importantly, shoudl I buy one?

if I had an iPhone and was happy with it I don't think I'd want/need an iPad.

I just bought an Android based tablet, but I don't have a smart phone at all.  my phone only does voice.  so I needed something to surf and check email especially for trips.  this would have saved me a lot of hassle if I had it 10 years ago!  lol!  but of course, 10 years ago...they didn't really exist!

Damn your voice of reason, Beagle!!!! You may have saved me hundreds of dollars!!! Good point tho, and I have been thinking that too. Up until now. The iPhone is not somehting I'd like to type long e-mails or documents on. I'd like something a little more workhorsey. And it's ok for watching videos on the tram, however, I travel quite a bit and it would be nicer to have a biger screen for when I'm watching movies on planes etc. I'm actually thinking of it as a replacement for my aging laptop and rather dedicate that 100% to music. Perhaps I should just save the money and get a new ultrabook. Hmmm....

Get an iPad,  you know you want to.  You're just looking for someone to talk you out of it then you'll be ****in an moanin because you went to NY and didn't get one...

Seriously though,  You'll not regret getting one.  When they first came out I couldn't think of a single reason why anyone would buy one.  I now use mine every day for everything, and there are things that work so well on an iPad that you'd never consider on a phone or laptop.

Ha ha no I'm looking to be persuaded into geting one so I can blame someone else for the spendage I never saw the need for one either. But recently I've changed my mind. Especially since the price in the US is a whole lot easier to justify then they are over here.

    haha!

well.  one thing I will say is that the smaller tablets (7") and phones really do seem way too small to me to write emails on.  that's why I got what I did.  I ended up with a 9.7" Android tablet.  only $200!

I don't like Android that much. To me, it's like Pro Tools I have a ton of apps for the iOS platform already so the choice is easy in that regard I'm going to get one... I think! Do you think 32Gb will suffice?

the memory depends on what you're going to use it for.  if you're going to load it up with music and videos then get the 64G, if you're only going to use it for surfing and email then the 16G will do.

The main memory eater is your music libray, but do you really need enough tracks to play 24/7 for three weeks without repetitions??  No.

I sometimes swear at my iPhone because it only has 16G ram, but most of it is tunes that I never listen to so it's my own fault realy.

Well, I have a 32Gb iPhone so I'll keep my music in there. I keep filling it up all the time with apps, films, muuuuuuusic and stuff. I don't plan on using the iPad for music at all, besides the tracks I'm working on. However, I am a movie junkie and when I'm out and about I need some space. 16Gb should do - but I'd be safer with 32Gb. I hate to run out of space on these gadgets... at least I know I won't need 64Gb Do you have the SIM card one Karyn?

Nope,  my iPad is wifi only, but it's never caused me a problem.   On the very rare occasions I've been caught in need of t'internet and no wifi available through hot spots I just set my iPhone as a hot spot and link to that.

If I were at home I could give you details of what my Sweetwater guy mentioned...

I was waiting on R-MIX and he told me he had isolated a Coltrane part then recorded it
on his isomething via mic and used an app that converted it to midi then sent it to another app called Symphony pro IIRC (for notation) and then emailed it and printed it out from the
    email and wa la.
And I thought learning by ear was hard....

If you want exactly what he said I'll try and post it this eve.

Ha ha Spacey, there's an app for everything these days The best thing about technology is that soon all we really need to remember and know how to do is breathe V-Control looks pretty cool. I might check it out. Dunno how much I want to use it as a controller but will look into it. I'm on Firefox these days so sorry for long paragraphs.

Well, you guys have never been to Oslo I see;) LOL

Bapu, you are probably right for all I know and actually, a couple friends and I are thinking of California somewhere for new years if we manage to find the cash for it. I was in New York 20 years ago as a little kid and have wanted to go back since then. It's ridiculous that I haven't been back since. That, and a cheap airfare, is why I want to go to New York first. I was thinking about staying in the US for two or three weeks and check out California, Vegas, Boston and visit my friend in Toronto but didn't know at the time how much cash I'd have. Next time my friend, and if I go anywhere around your area I'll buy you a beer

Craigb, I've heard the same thing - some Curt guy made a helluva point of it. But as long as I escape Oslo for a while then I'm happy

I got the iPad before I got an iPhone.... I faced the same thing when it was time for a phone upgrade:  no sense going android, when I have all these iApps already...

Oh, and Propellerhead's "Figure" app is too much fun for $0.99.  Even if it's not exactly recording ready.
