iLOK Activation problem after new motherboard swap (SOLVED via workaround)

Hi - I had the EastWest Composer Cloud Activated in iLOK to my desktop computer.  I just had to swap out the motherboard from that computer, prior to having a chance to deactivate anything.

With the new motherboard installed and the computer back up and running, it shows up twice in detected locations in the iLOK Manager program, once for the now offline old computer(same computer with old motherboard removed) and once for the same computer (with new motherboard installed).

It will not allow me to Deactivate the old location, because it wants access to it, which can never happen.

It will also not allow me to simply drag my EastWest Composer Cloud Activation down to the new location, because there are no Activations available.

So, what do I do to convince iLOK Manager that I will never again use that old location, and that I want to switch it to the new location?

IS there a way to accomplish this?

Can you move the license to your ilok account?   In the ilok program/manager    drag and drop the license

Re: iLOK Activation problem after new motherboard swap AAARRRGGGHHH trying to finish proje 2016/08/06 10:08:17 (permalink)
I'll take another look at it all this morning, after some additional coffee.  I was up working with my friend on HIS computer, til nearly 3:00 AM, so I got pretty brain dead last night, and am not sure I am awake yet this morning.

I will see if it will let me do that.  I DID try to drag to the target 'location' (my computer with the replaced motherboard), but it failed, because it wanted to access information from the OLD Location (which no longer exists, as the motherboard that forms part of the Location's identity, does not exist any longer).

So, it seems that I could get the NEW Location Activated with the license, but ONLY if I can figure out how to convince the iLOK Manager program that the old location is no longer (EVER) going to be able to be accessed.  I have to figure out how to DE-Activate the old Location.

I'll go grab a new cup of coffee and try your suggestion,

If the iLok License Manager doesn't allow you to do it, then you'll likely have to contact iLok tech support.

This is why I have no iLok products, and am careful to avoid other products with authorization tied to hardware. You can run into the same issues by simply disabling your NIC or upgrading a disk drive.

These days, I only buy products that are licensed independently of hardware. Fortunately, that's not hard, as most vendors are not so draconian. Having your motherboard crap out in the middle of a project is headache enough; your software shouldn't compound your misery.

End of rant. You should be able to deactivate your old license and re-activate without too much grief. At least you're dealing with a still-supported product.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

It won't let me do ANYTHING with the Activation that was tied to the old motherboard.  It INSISTS that I access the old Location, and that motherboard is no longer in existence.

So, I am stuck with a license that I paid for, with no thus far divined way to move it from a defunct location to its new location (same CPU and Windows installation, just new motherboard).

Any other thoughts?

Thanks Bitflipper - if I can figure out how to deactivate the old location, I should be fine, but that seems to leave me in a catch-22, and I don't see anywhere that they have provided for allowing a deactivation for a now-defunct computer location.  I certainly can't be the first person to have a computer component involved with determination of 'identity' for licensing purposes fail or get upgraded.

Hi Bob
Have you contacted iLok support - always found them pretty helpful.
The problem you are having is exactly why I use an ilok not the computer - I have iloks and a spare and just ZDT both so if anything happens, I'm OK - also this system is perfect for me as I work in two different Countries, so I can just take my iLoks with me - no authorization hassles!
Hope you get it sorted soon my friend
Cheers
Nigel

Yeah - THANKS for all the replies.

I DID fire off an email to the licensing folks, but continued to work the issue anyways, since I am dead in the water without access to the strings I loaded into a project I am racing to finish this weekend.

Anyways, after looking it all over, my having as much time this weekend as possible won out, over waiting possibly until Monday or Tuesday for any resolution from the licensing email I sent.

Since my EW Composer Cloud subscription is monthly, and due to renew on 08/14, I reasoned that if I were to go in and alter the auto-renew option for the current account, I could just buy a new subscription, effective today, and would no longer care about having to deactivate the old Location.  It would just go away after the 14th.

Sure enough, although it cost me about one week of subscription overlap, I am now completely back in business, with a new subscription that I have already gotten Activated to this computer, AND the old subscription is going to expire on the 14th and will just fade away......

Hi Bob
I would still get an iLok - make sure it can't happen again
Cheers

The ONLY other thing I have an iLOK Avtivation on my computer is for iZotope Nektar Elements, and if I ever lose that it's no biggie.

If I continue to have issues I'll just cancel my subscription.  I DO have Kontakt 5, so I could always pick up libraries created for that, and would be fine.  I just happen to like some of the EastWest instrument sounds.
