iNSTALLING UPGRADES ON A NEW COMPUTER

Silly question maybe.I am buying a new computer and want to install my X1D on the new machine. As I have bought all me versions of Sonar as upgrades from version 6, do I have to install everything from version 6 or can I just install the X1d upgrades and all will be well.

Well, that is not QUITE enough information to give an educated reply...

For instance, what size is the downloaded file that originally updated you to the BASE version of X1? It should be the full version, but the size would tell us for sure.

Also, did you purchase the "Expanded" upgrade?

In theory, you should be able to install in this order: X1 > X1c > Expanded (if applicable) > X1d.

Of course, I could be mistaken; when I have upgraded to new FULL versions it has always been from discs (then subsequent UPDATES - and the Expanded upgrade - have been downloads).

Each seperate version of SONAR is an independent installation. whether, SONAR Producer V6 or X1 Essential or X1 Studio or Producer.

They can all be installed simulataneously on the same computer and do not require a previous installation. You can also just unstall X1 but you will need to install the appropriate updates for X1.

Upgrade refers to pricing only based on your current ownership of an earlier or lesser version. An upgrade from SONAR 6 Producer to SONAR X1 Producer is an an upgrade from an earlier version. Upgrading from SONAR X1 Essential to SONAR X1 Producer is an upgrade from a lesser version of the same release. SONAR does not search for any previous licensing to complete the installation.

It will however look at settings from any previous versions installed and ask if you want to carry those forward to your new version where applicable.

SONAR's installation becomes a little more detailed as time passes on from the original release due to updates that occur along the way during a particular release cycle.

    As has already been mentioned:
With SONAR X1 there is the original Disc or download version Called SONAR X1, followed by X1C (which was a rollup of a number of patches and quick fixes including X1a and X1B) then either X1D or X1D Expanded depending on what you have purchased.

So its relatively painless. Once downloaded (X1C and the appropriate X1D patch) you just install from disc and before running anything just run the patches. they are self extracting installers which will take care of everything.

Your serial and registration numbers are available from your Account inside the Cakewalk customer store. Hope that helps. Go for it.

BTW. The End User Licence Agreement (EULA) allows you to use SONAR on only one computer at a time but it may be installed on multiple computers as long as you are the owner operator of the licenced software and you do not simultaneously use it on more than one computer at any one time.

Example: I have SONAR installed on my Studio PC, my laptop and my Desktop/home office computer. It's convenient for me as I can access my project files across a network at home or work and depending on where I am I can always have a play. Because its only ever me using it clearly I can't use more than one at a time, so only one licence required. Now if i had someone in my studio who was using SONAR while I was on the road with my laptop clearly I would need an extra licence. Hope that's clear.

It's clear............... but seemingly unenforceable. It seems more of a 'Please don't give this to all your friends' rather than a 'We'll know when all your friends are using it and come and get you'

Just install the latest full version/update and you'll be OK. No need to install all the versions..... just the latest one should do just fine.

I copy/pasted the following from a post here (I wish I would have noted who the author is so I could give him credit)on a clean install of X1.
If you don't need to reinstall just skip to the bottom to see the order of installation.
Herb- if this is outdated please advise cuz it sho nuff is a PITA

    1) Completely un-install SONAR from your computer. This is normally done from Start | Programs | Cakewalk. This will not remove any of your project files or audio data.

    2) Next you will want to open the Run Command

    a) In Windows XP this can be done by going to Start | Run
     b) In Windows Vista and 7 this can be done by holding down the ‘windows’ key and pressing ‘r’

    3) At the prompt type regedit and click OK.

***Backup your Registry before making edits - you do this by clicking the File menu, Export Registry File.

    4) Now delete the following Registry keys:
     HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X1
     HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Cakewalk Music Software\SONAR Producer\X1

*Please note that this will remove any effects presets and key bindings you may have made in Cakewalk. You can back these up separately if you like, using Options|Key Bindings, Tools|SONAR Plug-in Manager, and Options|Colors. Hit F1 in these views for detailed instructions on how to do this.

    5) Open the 'Run' command again.

    6) Copy and paste the following into the prompt:   %appdata%\Cakewalk

    7) This will open your Cakewalk Application Data folder, right-click on the SONAR folder and choose rename.

     8) Rename this folder SONAR X1 Backup.

      9) Open the 'Run' command again and type msconfig Click OK and then click on the Startup tab at the upper right of the window that opens.

      10) Uncheck all items listed, click OK, then restart your computer. You can always recheck those items again at a later time.

      11) Then reinstall SONAR. Make sure to have any virus scanners disabled on installation. It is not required or recommended to turn off any windows services.

    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The reinstall sequence should be as follows:

    Sonar X1
    Sonar X1c
    Expanded
    Sonar X1d

I have all versions since PA6 through X1.

I only have X1 installed on both of my latest builds. Never installed any other versions prior to X1.

Npw with X1, you have to start with the base X1 install and install all the updates a, b, c, d, expanded and PC modules in the order they were delivered or you'll get your knickers in a twist.

    Go slow and carefully.
