iPad or ?
How many of you have an iPad? what version and configuration do you have? My phone doesn't do data - or well, it will, but I refuse to pay for the data service. I'm cheap. I'd like to have something that I can: check email when I'm out or on a trip surf the web - post on the forum, etc, when i'm out another possible use: as a sheet music display? could I use an iPad or droid tablet or similar for sitting on the music stand, display sheet music and turn the pages by touch? are there other considerations? is iPad much better than droid for these things? do I need the latest and greatest or would a 1st gen do? thoughts?

iPads don't stand up to being hit with a pair of 5b's. I haven't been allowed to try out any of the others.

I've got a first gen iPad, and it doesn't in any way feel like an obsolete device to me. Indeed, it just got a free update last week. You can pick them up for about half the price of the current model on ebay. This particular forum doesn't work too great on iOS Safari, it's probably worth noting.

John T, just FYI the iPad 2 running OS 5 can post on this forum without problems - better than Firefox ..... It was the upgrade to OS5 that made it possible. I have several sheet music freebies running, plus Guitar Pro for iPad. Yes you can scroll the sheets. Cheers, Jerry

Beags, I'm also on first gen iPad, and I updated to iOS5. Not a single problem posting here after the upgrade, and I also don't feel like I'm missing anything from the newer models, except maybe a camera (but very rarely, as I have an iPhone and use that camera all the freaking time). Might be NICE to have the better re screen as on the new iPad, but it's not a deal breaker, as the original iPad screen is still MILES better than any other tablet I've touched. I've been seeing iPhone microphone attachments lately... Which tells me that musicians are using them in gigs. Whether for set lists or lyrics or chord charts, I don't know. I haven't tried looking for sheet music apps, but I'm positive they are put there. Sibelius, maybe? My biggest issue is the use of Flash on many music sites, but specifically Soundclick (SoundCLOUD works like a dream, though). There IS a Soundclick iPad app, and it totally works.... Except if you are trying to follow a link (like, say... From the Songs forum). The link takes you to Soundclick, where it's noted that the iPad doesn't support Flash, and would you like to continue on the webpage (with no sound) or open the app? Opening the App loses the link and you then must search for the band. A Problem. And why I'm so much happier with SoundCloud these days. That being said, unless I'm actually MAKING music (and even then, sometimes I'm doing it on the iPad, just for fun), I'm not on my PC any more. I don't need to be. Ahhhhh.... Sweet freedom..... :)

NoNO... No cost to upgrade. IOS upgrades are always free with iProducts. I note that isn't included in the clever "Why people buy Apple products" chart... ;) I have a 32 gig version with cellular data access, but I never use it. The beauty of it, though, is that you can buy the data access MONTHLY if you want to... Like, say I did buy a month it last year for vacation, when I knew I would be hard pressed to find wifi as often as I wanted it. I think it was $15? And there are higher levels, but I never exceeded my data limit. Even using it a LOT for surfing, finding restaurants and stuff.

To jailbreak means to get into the guts and do something that voids the original warranty. I think it was originally done when AT&T was the only cell carrier, and people wanted to use the product on other networks.

Oh! Read this about Jailbreaking.... Why and what... And THEN it says that even if a product is jailbroken it can be RETURNED to its original state by refreshing it with iTunes. Coolio. So.... I think you could probabLy buy a jailbroken one, and restore it. Still voided the warranty, though. http://articles.cnn.com/2...ular-apps/2?_s=PM:TECH Scarlett is my new lover.

Reece, I just got an Ipad2 for the little missus for Mothers Day. It's the 16 version and it's pretty cool from the little bit she let me mess with it. A data plan for it was $14.99 per month through AT&T. We have a wireless network in the house, but the data plan lets her surf the web anywhere. We have Droid phones also, but the Ipad is obviously bigger and easier to read. Other than her Ipod, it's the only Apple product we own. Best Buy had it for $399.00. Randy

Beagle thanks again Jules! you're awesome! and glad your "making out" with your new soundcard! baps - go back to your corner! BWAHAHAHA! Making out.... Hey, listen! After all the help you've given ME over the years, I'm thrilled to finally have something to say that might be of some use! I also know people who adore the Andoid platform-- I haven't used it at all, but I'm not going to say that one is better than the other. I think it's a very personal preference. We have both PCs and Macs in this house (yeah... Both of which are plural... It's a problem). We were both enamoured with the iPad when it first came out, tried a few other tablets on the market at the time, and for us, it was a no brainer. It may be a bit more difficult of a decision now. But we have been more than happy with our choice, and seriously, I don't have an issue with people calling me an Apple Slave. Because I'm not. But, I do like stuff that WORKS. If, at the time I made the purchase, there had been anything else that fit the bill, it would have been considered. There wasn't. And I'm now happy with what I have and how it works for the two iPhones, the four iPods and the iPad in my house. Sick, isn't it? But they have all done exactly what they are supposed to with no headaches. WIN.

honestly I've resisted apple for many years. I only have PC's in the house and our phones are not even smartphones. just basic. the mp3 players I've had are not iPods either. I've not even used an Apple computer since oh, 1994 maybe? in college in a math lab. anyway - I'll gladly, tho, listen to what anyone has to say about droids, I don't know anything about them either. but after reading all this great stuff - specially from Jules - I am leaning toward getting a 1st gen 16G iPad. I kind of want it before we go on vacation in June - I don't know how "spotty' the wifi will be but I doubt the service - even ATT or Verizon would work in Cancun...

Although I like to have fun with the Apple fanboy crowd, I personally think that anyone who is either overly pro-Apple or overly pro-Android/Windows is defective. Both have their pros and cons and, in my humble opinion, the Apples tend to appeal more to right-brain thinkers with the other appealing to left-brainers. Since I've taken tests that show I'm both extremely left-brain AND extremely right-brain (with very little in the center - where "common sense" is supposed to be maybe?), that I can see the benefits of both. For the record, I've got a Toshiba Thrive and only use it for watching training videos, reading and playing one game (of which I have the highest recorded score - *sigh*).

I was looking at the "tablet" PC's as they call them. They look and act very similar to the iPad. My daughter was issued an iPad from the school for her senior year instead of a laptop.... they actually had a choice...she went iPad. Anyway, at Best Buy.... I think it was a Samsung running the Android operating system. It connected to the net via wi-fi so I'm guessing no monthly fees. But you are limited to needing a hot spot nearby. It was under $400.

Reece, I got an Android tablet to use instead of a laptop for web browsing and writing and music control etc. For webbing it is fine. I use it when out of town. It looked fine on Cake's site but I never put the password in to write. I guess it would work for that if I got it to. Writing in MS Word is a pain, mainly because of the software. Short stuff (email etc.) works well, even w/ a cheezy keyboard and holder combo. But MS Word doesn't look the same or act the same. If you are working on articles, essays, your great American novel etc. Android is not the way to go. Music control, which was why I went w/ Android, I havent' gotten to work at all. My older music computer here at home isnt wireless, so I thought USB would work. But I got a G-Tablet, which you have to hack to get to the Android Store (Viewsonic has their own store) so all the programs are verboten w/o messing w/ it. I did put TouchDaw Free on my Android phone but simply havent 'invested the time in it to see if it would work and then hack my Tablet. So for music control, I wouldn't do android. I haven't gotten any sheet music apps, but there is a tuner, recorder and keyboard player I've downloaded which are OK. I would think an IPad would be the way to go at this point - lots of apps and info. If you wait a little, no doubt Windows 8 is made for the tablet (I was visiting one of the project leaders in San Jose last month) and looks to be the real thing to integrate w/ your music/writing software. I would think at some point you should be able to plug your Tablet and desktop together and work as one big unit. Of course, that is what I thought about Android, but getting 2 different OS to work should be harder than combining one. Not much help, but my experience. It is like what they used to say about computers back when - look at the programs (apps) you want to use and buy the according hardware. @
https://soundcloud.com/a-pleasure-dome http://www.bnoir-film.com/ there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head. 24 And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the Lord. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

Like AT said, doing normal stuff is just different on a tablet. I got mine because it was on sale (due to a supposedly new and smaller version coming out "soon"), it had full sized USB ports and it would let me do some training outside of the office. Looking back I should have just chipped in a couple of hundred dollars more and bought a laptop. I can't stand messing up the screen by dragging my fingers all over it (I use a stylus now, but only one with a large, eraser-like head works so no fine drawing is possible). I definitely won't have a phone plan for it and have occasionally used it for the internet, but even that's too different for me to want to use it. Unfortunately, while you can get a wireless, external keyboard and mouse for it, the gear won't work with anything else (like a laptop) so that's about $160 that would be wasted IMO. I'm still going to use it until I finally do get a laptop but, unless it becomes my dedicated iTunes controller / picture slideshow, I'll probably get rid of it at that time. For musical needs, the iPad is still the way to go. There are WAY more applicable apps (applicable apps???) of higher quality. Then Windows 8 will completely change things and push Apple back a couple of steps (until they leap-frog out in front again down the road). The Android OS is ok, but I still need a "real" OS.
Time for all of you to head over to Beyond My DAW!

Beagle, A couple things to compare................IMO only Android or Apple............ OS Stability.....................Apple Build Quality................. ..Apple Touch Screen ............... Apple Battery Life.....................Apple One other note...................don't Jail Break or buy something that has been Jail Broken 1. It Voids the warranty.................even if you reset it. 2. Not all Jail breaking methods are the same.........some are primitive hacks. 3. You'll open up the OS to virus's................The stock IPads and I-pod touch's are virtually virus free............and stay that way.
