"in-app purcchases"
there was some recent confusion introduced by something Anderton said regarding "in-app purchases" Anderton
bitman You should understand that to the outside world we are a bunch of wayward individuals with a cakewalk cute playpen called the "ProChannel". Don't expect too much more than a wry grin as they ignore you. Cake made deals with various plug makers to bring plugs to the ProChannel.
You never know...lifetime updates, lots of new users, and in-app purchases could be influencers.
i think it would be useful if this ("in-app purchases") could be clarified by someone from cakewalk :-) what does "in-app purchases" mean?

Seriously? You don't know what an "in-app" purchase is? They first became available in 2009 with iOS 3.0. I don't understand why you need someone from Cakewalk to clarify what an in-app purchase is when typing "in-app purchase definition" into Google will tell you all you need to know. Initially it meant purchasing from within a mobile application, but it has since broadened to apply to applications in general. I'm not from Cakewalk but I'm certainly aware of what an in-app purchase is. Cakewalk has always sold items separate from the main program - Rapture Pro, Concrete Limiter, CA-2A, Hardgroove loop library, etc. They will continue to do so, except make the process more convenient. If that's too boring, you can make up a conspiracy theory that Cakewalk will periodically disable features, and demand a ransom to re-enable them.

Somebody seems a little cranky. So does this mean that the Cakewalk store will only be accepting bit coin or other crypto currencies ?

No one asked, including anyone from Cakewalk, but here's one way I'd like to see this happen. DISCLAIMER: I have no idea what Cakewalk has in mind, I'm just throwing out an idea here. Suppose I'm in Rapture Pro and browsing the Guitar presets. I see a folder with an asterisk called "Gibson Les Paul 12-String." This means that something new is available but not installed. I click on it and see a dialog box labeled "Gibson Les Paul 12-String Expansion Pack" with three options: More information, Remove, and Not Now (in case I want to check it out later). If I choose more information, it takes me to a landing page on the store with audio examples, a description, and an option to buy. Or the dialog box might say "Free Gibson 12-String presets available for download, happy holidays." Something similar could be done with updates. For example, I go to the browser and Melodyne has an asterisk. I right-click and see a dialog box that says "Melodyne Version 5 now Available." If I click on more information, I'm taken to the store with update pricing and specs. Remove takes the asterisk away and leaves the old version intact. Not Now leaves the asterisk to remind me there's an update available. I would find this less intrusive than Melodyne opening my default browser and constantly reminding me V4 is available, which I'm not ready to install yet because I have V2 Editor and while V4 is nice, I don't want to step back to Essential and lose the Pitch Modulation tool. The mechanism for in-app purchases could also be used for updates and freebies. For example I still come up with FX chains, even though they're not included in the Rolling Updates any more (if they're included in Rolling Updates, users have to download the Anderton Collection each time just to get one preset). I could donate the preset and people could get it for free...or not if they're not interested.

How the h*ll should I know? Yeah, I'm cranky. I come to this forum to find out how to get the most out of SONAR (the forums stated purpose) and assist people having issues, but instead there are all these weird threads, some of which border on conspiracy theories. Why should someone expect a Cakewalk staffer to stop working on support issues or improving the program and explain what an "in-app" purchase is when the concept has already existed for 7 years, is in common use, and defined in multiple places that are a click away in a search engine. I just don't get it.

the same people who rant about technology gladly hand their listening data to Google, their viewing data to Netflix, their shopping history to Amazon, their browsing history to Microsoft, and their messaging history to Facebook. But heaven forbid we give our credit card to Cakewa- oh wait.

I didn't know what "in-app purchasing" was either. Now, I do. Craig, you might be assuming a little much. Some of us don't live on the cutting edge. I get the feeling that this "in-app purchasing" was instigated with smart phones and pads, of which I don't have. If you want an example of how lame and intrusive "in-app purchasing" is, buy an IK multimedia program.

I personally wouldn't want anything in the application that isn't installed and available - ready to use that very second. It would make the application appear far less professional, In my personal opinion. "In App" if executed would be better served within command center, such as the notification that something new is available...when you are using the application that is related to updating the software, not when you are in the application already and working.

I can't wait for the in-app that will interrupt work to tell me if I buy the XXX comp that vocal I'm working on will float perfectly above the music. "Go ahead - buy it. You know you want to. And isn't there some chocolate pie the fridge? Go on, you want that too." (Damn smart fridge, telling tales.) @

Personally, I'm picturing this type of thing in the Start Screen since that's already where notifications exist.

I take it no one is using the Microsoft Store or apps from it. Many apps come as free but features are unlocked by in app purchase. This is stated in the store when it applies. Its a trend that will only become more and more widespread. I not crazy about it but it is what it is. I think its here to stay.

Surprised no one has mentioned Addictive Drums. Personally I find their approach intrusive and it it takes away from the professionalism of a great product. But, hey, I am certainly not a professional, so maybe I shouldnt care. I am not against tastefully implemented in-app purchases, I think that could be convenient, just dont like the way AD gives as much screen to the modules I don't own as those I do. It feels like they are hitting me over the head with a sales pitch every time I use the product.
