installing the upgrade after rebuliding my "C" drive,

If I were to clean my C drive and re-install windows 7 will
I have t re-install X1 and X2 with all their patches before installing X3?

i hope not but I fear the answer.

    No, each version is a full version. "Upgrade" refers to the price you paid for the product. You may want to perform an advanced install of older versions to get plug-ins not included in X3.
