"For nearly 60 years, the guns of Alta have shot down menacing snow crusts" So it's true... Not bad for a Florida "hick" who has only seem snow a handful of times eh? :-)

Indeed. Although they had to replace a few members of the crew after they got a bit over enthusiastic and launched a shell over the mountain and into a neighborhood on the other side. HEHE yeah, that happened back in '05, but it's very rare... they've got GREAT avy control guys, point is, people go where they're not supposed to. they are called DUMB ASSES. LOL so, the patrollers can't be everywhere all the time... most of the time, when you hear about these guys getting buried or having close calls, they've ducked the rope or willingly gone right thru the sign that says ' you are leaving the ski area, and if you think it's safe to do this, you are a dumbass."

I'm leaving Sunday for Florida. I'll bring you some snow, but it'll probably transform into rain by the time I get there. You're up north, right? Too bad I'll be down south Ft. Lauderdale area. Probably too far to say Hi.

Yes, I'm up in Tallahassee about as close to Georgia as you can get. I hope you enjoy Lauderdale... the weather is still very nice. Thanks for the links to the stories... I had heard about the howitzers but I didn't know the history of the Alta ski scene and that it was on the forefront of developing those techniques. I find it fascinating. best regards, mke

As a mortarman gunner when I was in the service we never saw where our rounds hit. But we were not shooting at snow. I was the gunner for both 81 MM mortars and 4.2 inch mortars. The 4.2 are 107 mm. The cannon here is a 105 mm. Bigger is better.

the weather is still very nice. We're really hoping so. One of the things we're doing is getting stock footage of stuff that doesn't look like Salt Lake. So with any luck the weather and wildlife will cooperate. We've got another crew headed up to the New York state Finger Lakes area, which is a place I've always wanted to visit but haven't made the opportunity to yet. They leave in May, so I might be able to weasel my way on to that trip.
