is it possible for a file to be too lagre for sonar?

So for the first time i decided to record a band that i am producing/rec all in one session in sonar 8.5.3. we are almost done with the whole CD and are on vox right now with a file that is up to 10gigs large. all tracks and fx are frozen except for L2 on the master. The problem arises when after about 10-15 min of recording I save, then  then press playback and sonar tells me that the audio cant be found. sure enough, after i have saved, i go and look in my CPU and my Glyph050q external HDD(connected by SATA)  that the project is on, is gone!? it even did this same thing last week, when i was backing up the same project to a different external hardrive, pressed save as, went through the whole save process, and then at the end, both external HDD were not showing.
I'm losing it guys.ive run every test i can think of. memtest, clean. Defrag C drive and external HDD, fine.
My only guess is that the the file size is just too large for Sonar to work in, and my Ram isnt enough?
Here's my specs:
Windows 7
4gig Ram
INTEL|CORE I5 760 2.80G processor
500gig internal HDD
Glyph 500gig external HDD(files and music is recorded and stored on)
GIGABYTE GA-P55A Mother board

I should note as well that i replaced the power supply 2 weeks ago do to the fact that i tried to reinstall my UAD-1 card and as soon as i touched the card to the pci slot my CPU jump started off and on and wouldnt boot fully untill i did a hard shut down after this problem.
I know, i know this could be the root of it all, and im sure it has something to do with it, but im looking to see if anything else could be wrong.

I have heard that some external HD's will power down and go off line because of power saving settings. Make sure it's set to never.
