it's been a while...monitoring midi files

Hi All,

Newbie here...

It's been a while since I craked open my Sonar Producer 8.

My son plays Bari sax in his Jr High Band and was all excited that he was going to play the solo in the James Bond Theme.

So, of course I said well let me find the midi file for the song so that you can practice along with it...

Well,,, hours later...I found the midi file, I got it transposed to the right key, but now I can't figure out how to monitor it through the headphones. i use a Windows Xp PC with Line 6 TonePort UX2.

I usually just lay down guitar tracks, i don't get into Midi at all...so that's why I'm so lost.

How do I monitor the midi tracks through my Line 6 GearBox interface using my tonePort UX2 as my interface to Sonar Producer 8?

I can hear my guitar through the headphones but not the midi tracks. I can't seem to route the output of the midi tracks through my toneport.

Please advise.

Best,
bob

You will need to play the midi file through a vst or outboard instrument. For quick listening purposes, you should open the synth rack and load up the TTS-1 synth. This is a general midi player. Select all the midi data tracks and assign their outputs to the TTS-1 synth. You can probably select track 1 hold shift and select the last track to make the tracks actively selected ( the clips in the track manager will all have a black background ). Go up to Tracks and choose output from the drop down box and assign all outputs to TTS-1. This should get you started.

thanks, followed all your directions... that got me down the road a bit, though, I'm still unable to hear any output in my headphones out of my Line 6 Toneport UX2. Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Please advise.

    Insert-Softsynth  Select the TTS-1
Go to the MIDI track(s) and set the Output to the TTS-1
Click on the play button. You should hear the track play.

You do have the UX2 connected to the computer via a USB cable, right?
Go to Options-Audio-Drivers and make sure the UX2 is setup as the Input and Output device.

Make sure the master buss is set to the usb interface outputs your headphones use,( 1/2 ) sometimes Sonar will default my interface to the SPDIF output. Also go to audio options and make sure the toneport is the selected audio device. un tick all other devices. Open the audio devices in control panel and make sure the toneport is the default device.
