It was quite some game - I'm not a huge fan but that was riveting stuff. Can't remember anything like that before, and the Brazilian fans standing and cheering the Germans 7th goal was astonishing, and even more humiliating for their own team.

If you had watched the last two-thirds of the game, you would have seen hundreds of Brazilians crying like that (after 30 minutes Germany was already up 5-0).  First defeat in a match that mattered on home turf since 1975 for Brazil and worst defeat in the last 94 years...

Sure, they were missing their Captain (suspended due to multiple yellow cards) and their best player (broken vertebrae), but they just gave up after the first goal was scored against them.  Sad.

Yep.. I only began to watch soccer/futball or whatever you may call it during the last World Cup, I found it interesting and now I occasionally watch British league play on cable but I liked the German team then and now. They are a machine and Nauer is as good as any goalie I have seen, he is a wall. Müller and Özil are my favorite players on the German team. I look forward to this afternoon's match between Argentina and The Nederlands . I can't help thinking that a WC final between Germany and Argentina would be, in a way, like Germany against Germany (if you know history).
I hope the Dutch win today, I think it will make for a bigger event in Europe. I just hope there is no trouble between Brazilian and Argentine fans.
I was texting with my daughter in Germany during the match, she was in some pub... she said it was crazy there. I hope Britain does better next time around, I think that they should be, and are, better... but like they say in American football, "Any Given Sunday".

Did anyone else watch the ESPN panel after the game? They had the two regular announcers along with an ex-German and ex-Brazilian player. They talked about the emotional response of the people and the team.. especially the team. The Brazilian guy mentioned that the older players from a few decades ago had a problem with the crying and such and that the team has a team psychologist and in his opinion there is a deeper problem with the team, deeper than the defensive planning or anything else, a group emotional problem. They didn't go much into it except to mention that there is something really wrong there. During the game one of the announcers, he seemed to have maybe a Scottish or Irish accent.. at least twice made a reference to "amateur hour". It was almost like the Brazilian team didn't think they needed a plan, like it was settled in their minds before the match that they were going to win.

I too noticed the Brazilian fans cheering the German team at the end (Özil almost made it 8-1), maybe they just decided they had to cheer a winning team.  It was either good or odd... good I think. Did you notice how serious the German team, Nauer especially, was about giving up that one point. They were serious from the beginning to the very end, like a pro sports team should be.

@ Craigb... Sure, they were missing their Captain (suspended due to multiple yellow cards) and their best player (broken vertebrae), but they just gave up after the first goal was scored against them.  Sad.
Did you hear what they said about the player with the vertebrae problem? I wish I had paid more attention because I could swear the announcer said that he had a fractured vertebrae, could not feel his legs, mentioned paralysis, and then if I heard right he said he should be, and I quote, "right as rain in a month"... really? I wish my back healed like that. If he has a fractured vertebrae and cannot feel his legs I don't quite see how he will ever be "right as rain" EVER again, much less in a month.

And: First defeat in a match that mattered on home turf since 1975 for Brazil and worst defeat in the last 94 years...
I heard that too. This game ended a 62 game winning streak in "competitive matches" at home for them, and the first defeat on home field in any kind of game since 2002. I think there were several records broken in that match and by Germany, being the first team in WC history to go to the semi-finals four times in a row. They are doing something right there. Brazil needs to go back to the very beginning, to the lower schools and rec teams, figure out what is wrong and do a reset, this really should not have happened. The game should have been like the men's final at Wimbledon, not a blowout.

For sure though, to the OP... it is just a game. The thought crossed my mind, wondering if there was going to be mass suicide in Brazil. I'm glad this thread got started, it has been on my mind ever since the match. It was a bit disturbing to me to see people such an emotional mess over a game. Little kids were really bawling. It disturbed my wife more than me. I had fun with her, she was like OMG, they are crying... I was like, ha haa, I hope they show more of them crying... so I can laugh at them.  (I know, I know...)

Yeah, I am becoming a fan but if it is OK I will call it soccer. I just cannot go with "because futball", even is a skinny legged girl is saying it.

One hour till the next match!

BTW, Bauer may be going to Manchester United. Munich and Arsenal are both interested too but Schalke is giving him up for financial reasons.

heh... I know right?
You got people like SRV and Eric Johnson totally obsessing over EVERYTHING, Johnson taking years to get something sounding just right and then 99% of listeners hear, "an electric guitar". Then Billy Gibbons is playing a guitar covered with fur, strung with a set of 8's and he sounds great. I thinkhe could play an Alamo guitar through a Fender Frontman amp and sound better than most people.
Something gets done wrong and everyone is like WOW, that sounds great! Like the Peter Green/Gary Moore Les Paul, it was wired wrong by mistake from the factory and became a legend.

Life is short, shorter than you think... have fun while you can. Be happy, you know?

So? Who is going to win? Nederalnds or Argentina (don't cry for me..) LOL.

Well, yes, he has a fractured vertebrae, but often it's a hairline fracture which means it will heal itself.  They showed pictures of him walking at his home prior to the Brazil game so I'm not sure where the "can't feel his legs" or paralysis comments came from.  Now, after that game against Germany, it wouldn't surprise me that he may feel paralized!

Nepal teenager commits suicide after Brazil defeat
KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) -- A teenager in eastern Nepal committed suicide after her favorite team Brazil lost badly to Germany in the World Cup semifinals, police said Thursday.
Police said the 10th grade student was depressed and hanged herself from the ceiling on Wednesday morning in Bharaul village located 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the capital Katmandu.

Argentine players and fans were crying yesterday after they won... it is a little scary to me for people to be this emotionally involved in a game. Sort of like hearing noises in the dark or something, it is disconcerting. Where was it that they had big riots at soccer games a few years ago.. and why?

I would hazard a guess that anyone doing that has far deeper issues than the result of a football game.

Unfortunately there's been a history of violence associated with football which dates back to the 19th Century, although the media picked up on 'football hooligans' over here in the 1960's, when rivalry between certain teams led to clashes between 'firms' or gangs of supporters, before during and after the games. It's all to do with ritualized male aggression, and little to do with the sport.

Yeah, I read it the first time Bats. It's like the story of the hospital orderly who was 'pranked' by an Australian DJ pretending to be the The Queen, and subsequently committed suicide. It wasn't the prank call that did it.

Brazil has always had an identity crisis. A third world country with beautiful beaches and enormous natural resources but never quite realizing its potential.

In the 1960s Charles DeGaule mockingly said: : "Brazil is the country of the future and always will be."

Recently, there has been an upturn in the economy but the majority of that wealth has stayed in the upper classes. Traffic in Sao Paulo is absolutely insane; Their Polititians make ours look honest. Right next store to multi-million dollar beach condos are some of the worst slums on the planet. Brazil is a basket case.

But when it comes to soccer, Brazil has always been world class. Their teams have been at the top or near the top for decades. Soccer symbolizes national pride. On the field at least, Brazil could compete with anyone.

It may be hard for the rest of the world to understand but for many in Brazil the lopsided loss to Germany is a national disaster of epic proportions.
