just loaded Outlook????

Hi,

When I went to Win7 I got caught up in trying to avoid having my email on the cloud.

I've used a few things including Thunderbird and just never got back to my routines that I enjoyed with Outlook Express.

Yesterday I installed a new boxed copy of Outlook 2010 which I bought a few months ago.

Last night I downloaded a whole mess of email I had stuck on my server. I was using a webmail app to get to it... but I was leaving it on there.

The reason I was doing so is that when I was using Thunderbird last spring I mistakenly thought that I had downloaded my email and deleted it from the server and poof it disappeared from Thunderbird... it caused me loads of trouble to lose all that email.

So last night it appears I actually downloaded all my email and now I want to delete it from the server but this time I want to actually see and confirm that the email made it to my local system.

 I can't find it!

Does anyone have any idea where it may be?

I installed Outlook to a defualt Programs(x86)/Office folder.

 I'm off to google stuff....

 Thanks.

best regards,
mike

it'll be in the outlook.pst file
you need to ensure outlook is using this file as the default mail archive
When outllok is looking at the correct outlook.pst file your Inbox will show you your downloaded mail

    look in C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

    I found a mike@harmoniccycle.com.pst in

    C:\Document and Settings\Mike\AppData\Local\MIcrosoft\Outlook

I could not open C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings

The Local Settings directory threw an access denied dialog.

The .pst I found is about 1/10th the size I anticipated... is it heavily compressed or do the attachments get left elsewhere?

    Thanks very much.

    best regards,

Are you logged on as an Administrator?
I believe they are heavily compressed.

I think I am logged on as an administrator.

I'm liking Outlook... I was actually able to look at my account properties and found the real full size .pst

    Outlook says it is here:

    C:\Users\Mike\Documents\Outlook Files\mike@harmoniccycle.com.pst

    But I found it here:

    C:\Users\Mike\My Documents\Outlook Files\mike@harmoniccycle.com.pst

The discrepancy between the Documents and My Documents confuses me.

The .pst seems to be the correct size.

I think the other smaller .pst is from a mistaken Outllook install from last night when I attempted to automatically connect with SMTP and found I needed to manually connect as POP3.

    Thanks for helping.

    best regards,
    mike

You should also be able to export that file from within Outlook and put a copy anywhere you can access Mike.

Due to wanting to save emails for work, I've changed from POP3 to IMAP for incoming emails.  This means all emails stay on the server (without having to add retention during email account setup) so you can download them from anywhere and any device.  Of course, after you get a lot saved on the server the downloading becomes slower, so I usually archive and remove from the server each month.

Also, by default, Windows likes to protect certain directories (at least in every OS through XP Pro - I don't have Windows 7 yet and can only assume).  You can change the default settings to see hidden files and extensions as well as being able to access so-called "system" directories.  This is done while in a folder through the "Tools" menu and "Folder Options" (again, at least through XP Pro).

+1 - especially on the archiving.  You can set the file size to trigger auto archiving if you want.

Microsoft likes to change the names of directories depending on where you view them from. Sometimes a folder you aren't allowed to open is just a link to where the actual folder is, which you are allowed to open.

They would claim that this is to somehow make things easier for end users.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.
