kjaerhus and co - challenge response authentication - after running out of business

Sadly enough that Kjaerhus seems to be out of business.. besides the VC-64 which I believe was a Kjaerhus-product/invention, I had bought the MPL1 Limiter which had been a good tool for as long as it was working.
Today I started installing all my DAW-stuff on a clean Win7-installation..
Started opening one of my recent projects and began to reinstall every plugin that I need..
I was quite shocked to see that the Kjaerhus-site was down,.. I scanned my backups and actually found the MPL-1 installation file plus the "Proof of Purchase"-Code.
But it's worth nothing without having a website responding to the authentication-attempt !
luckily I am not dependant on the MPL1, I have several other limiters that work well..

As Kjaerhus isn't the only company using that kind of "copy protection",.. I am a bit concerned on how reasonable such a mechanism is...

    agreed

Many people have complained about having to 'call home' to install a product you purchased in a box for your own use. This is reason #1 where the concern came from. Sorry it happened to you but will be par for the course with a lot of software. It's possible any company could go down and there'd be little recourse for consumers to fix it.

Yes, that's a shame. It shows that there is no perfection with any kind of copy-protection.

been there with superwave myself.. then like the phoenix they rose from the ashes 4-5 years later..

errm maybe the owner will release an unlock code or modify something so it's not locked to a machine.. was it bought out etc?  they could perhaps help older users.

I find this kind of copy protection completely unreasonable exactly for this reason.....

Would be nice to legislate that after paying a company for a product .... they  go out of business or decide to just quit ? That it become public domain and free for life with all copy protection released. I guess it would require that all software be designed to have a global key that releases it to public domain, but so be it. This should be the cost of imposing a EULA that requires re-validation or re registration just to move it off a computer or to re-install.

    Pay backs are a MF.
