laptop dropout problem
I'm having trouble with dropout on this new Dell laptop. Also a CPU warning notice after about 5 minutes of opening cakewalk and working on songs. My buffers in playback queue are 2. My buffer size is safe 350. I've run the wave profiler and the driver mode is MME. I/O size 512. Soundcard is Integrated audio. The one that came with it. What could be the problem?

Soundcard is Integrated audio. The one that came with it. What could be the problem? I think you answered your own question. The I/O buffers should be 128, the default. This shouldn't be changed unless you are having problems. Did you change it or was it set there the first time you looked at it?

Horus2... sounds like your still using the built in sound card... in a laptop no less.... You should start looking at getting a new soundcard to use for recording... with laptops, that means external interfaces.... when you bite the bullet and get a decent interface, alot of the problems you are having will cease.

External interfaces start at $20 for a thing called the UNO and go up. I have a Focusrite Saffire audio & midi firewire that cost $300 new. What you need to do is figure out if you need midi or audio or both... how many inputs you will record at the same time (MC4 limits you to 2) ..how many outputs you need, and of course your budget. Beagle has a nice page with lots of options listed in an easy to compare chart.
Go & talk to some music store pro audio guys, and get educated before you drop some cash. This way , you get th eright interface for you, the first time out.

I would not use my built in for recording, i do use it for playback on my live stuff, cause it sounds fine over a PA system. Berhringer has a nice cheap stereo USB in and out for around $30, that would be minumum, then go from there. I suggest googling Musicians' friend and taking a look at what they have, and the reviews there.

Actually, Herb (and Dennis), the UNO is just a MIDI to USB converter, not a soundcard. Just FYI. the behringer that Rob mentions is probably the cheapest, but it's also only 16bit and I'd still go for a 24bit system if possible. the cheapest external that I would recommend would be the new Line6 Toneport GX. I don't know anyone who has used one yet, but the line6 UX1 and UX2 are great devices. the GX is just for one input - instrument only and no phantom power, but it's only $50! the next step up would be the EMU0202 ($130) or the m-audio fasttrack ($80) - or the UX1 or UX2 for $90 and $140 respectively. http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/product/Line-6-Toneport-GX-USB-Recording-Interface?sku=241406
