leasing software?

With all the problems inherent in continually having to re-market software to new users to keep the corporate income flowing, (and leaving the existing users high and dry sometimes)  maybe some smart DAW developer should LEASE the software to users and then we would pay a yearly fee. (which could be no more expensive thab these "new" feature upgrades) And then they could spend their time refining and fixing things and developing new features instead of trying to figure out new ways to grab new users.    Talk about a loyal customer base then!

Now I know this is all really simplistic.   And I know cake will never do this.   just stirring up discussion.

I upgraded from sonar 6 to X1b.  I wouldn't have done that, as it worked well for me, except for V-vocal and session drummer.   Which I could never get to work and seem to be fine for me in X1b.   (with a few little annoyances)   I never really got to use 8.

I do like X1...I am using it for all my projects now.   Had no trouble moving them from 6.   I like the UI, I like the smart tool.   I like the pro channel (stupid name tho) for the way I work it is an improvement

But I am not using any third party plugs yet, although I would like to try some of the UAD stuff down the road.   and I'm looking into melodyne too, and either steven slate or BFD.

I am hoping that X1 becomes the platform that we all hope it becomes.  I have been with cakewalk since the twelve tone days (syncing adat's) And I would gladly lease my software if it would reduce some of these seemingly market driven issues.

Anyway I am making music today (and I'm not splicing tape) so for now I'm happy.

    That's what your doing now.
    You don't own anything.
You are granted the rights to use the software.
You can't sell it, give it away or trade it.

Chuck, not to go against Norrie or bring the thread off topic, but I've not had the same experience with those drums. I've had 0 issues with Superior with my Roland kit. As for BFD, it's the most realistic drum program out in my opinion. It really gives you a drum set in a room that YOU have to tweak just like a real kit. It's not an "out of the box savior" like some of these others today. You literally have to work the kit the same way you would a real one.

As for Slate drums...I've been a long time user of his stuff and though some is good, I do not like his tom or cymbal sounds at all. Very dark and well, nowhere near the love that went into sampling his kicks and snares in my opinion. Also, I get robotic sounds from the Slate stuff at times. You'll never get that from BFD because to my knowledge, it sports the most samples per drum out of any software out today. It's nearly impossible to get a robot sound out of it especially with the "machine gun" mode set to on. Also, when you kill the room and over-heads on BFD, you are left with a drum sound...like the instrument is sitting on your lap. When you kill the room sounds in the others, you are left with a pretty synthetic sounding instrument that at times, resembles a soundfont from a Sh!tBlaster 64 gold card.

So in other words, if you want true command of your kits and want them to be as close to the real thing as possible to where YOU have to work them, BFD 2 without hesitation. If you don't want to spend much time on your drums and want good out of the box sounds, Superior 2 because of the killer kits you can get. Slate is last on my list only because I do not like the toms and cymbals offered. The kicks and snares are really good though and they sound good right out of the box. Just my own personal opinion though. I've been using this stuff for years on a daily basis with both V Drums, a custom Roland pad kit I built and 2 different brains..the TD 10 and the TD 20. All have worked well with all the modules I have here and I've never had a problem with Superior or even EZD. Hope this helps...good luck in whatever you decide.

thx for the detailed response danny...you must be one fast typist!...i have not yet made up my mind (or found the extra space in my budget yet)   but I will be auditioning lots of stuff before I actually purchase something.   So you're having no issues with BFD and X!?

    thx

No problem...yeah I type like a lunatic. Sounds like a machine gun over here. LOL! No Sir, so far no problems with BFD 2 and X1. I'm using the latest BFD 2 release which installed seemlessly and updated my old one. Not a single issue or a crash with anything as of now. Kontakt was driving me crazy for a bit in X1, but recreating my templates for X1 stopped that issue for me and all is well. Good luck with this stuff. If I can help you out at all, let me know. :)
