lexicon alpha and music creator

well i bought myself a lexicon alpha.  apparently it would be good to record the electronic keyboard into the computer without scratchiness.
i plugged it in i can hear the sounds i want to hear through the headphone (actually i put computer speakers).   there's something wrong with the Cubase LE 4 CD-Rom and i can't install it.  so i want to use my MC 3.  i downloaded the Lexicon Alpha drives from the Internet.  however i can't record.  i went to Wave profiler but it conducts the test on the Conexant AC-Link Audio (1 in, 1 out).  i assumed that it would conduct the test on the Lexicon Alpha, it is plugged in.
 
when i click on the Drive profiles tab Lexicon Alpha is there.  is also in the Drives. 
 
i don't know what to do.  does anybody knows?
 
Computer: old hp pavillion.  Windows XP.

your advice was very helptul i was able to reocord but the playback is awful. the computer was recognizing the Alpha, but MC 3 wasn't; not totally.  i made the changes you suggested and it recorded via audio.  i don't know how to use MIDI, except in stagff view where i can enter the notes myself.  but as i said the playback is very bad.  when i tried to adjust it using volume and trim.  i lost the sound . it scratchess more than if i was using the line in alone.   please send more helpful advice.

how do i adjust latency and buffers?  where do i go to point and click.  Guitarhacker, and anyone else that answer this message, please remember i'm no techie, things have to be explain in baby steps.  Thanks.

Right. Most of the bad things that happen with audio can be fixed by changing a few things in 'Options>Audio'. You might want to look around in there and see what those settings are, and familiarize yourself with some of the terms.
There's a glossary in the Help files which can help you.
I had the same problem when I started with MC 2003 8 years ago; I didn't know the terms. It took a lot of reading to reach the level of competence I now have, which certainly isn't at an 'expert' level at all. I'm no techie, either.

the story has a happy ending!!!!  the budding recordist  (HA!) was able to begin her recording saga because Beagle, the expert recordist in platinum shining armour saved the day.  i slided the the latency slider to the fast side and all the unpleasant noise disappeared.  i have just resurfaced to tell you this, 'cause im so happy!  now down to the dungeon to record 16 children songs.

coggsy - try using ASIO driver mode.

Sorry.... when I clicked the link it took me to an Ebay page with a whole bunch of computers on it with prices..... 
We have a low tolerance here for spammers. And they get reported quickly. When posting a link, be careful what you have in it...... one trick spammers use all the time is digging up old threads and commenting in them with their links..... which is what you did.... then the page was full of computers...... 

I suggest starting a new thread on the topic. 

Beagle is right however. If the interface uses ASIO drivers, be sure to use them.  Using a stereo amp and speakers to monitor is fine...... I have done that in the past. 

You may still need to adjust the latency and buffers with ASIO but you should also be able to get the latency down to the point with ASIO drivers that it is not an issue.
