looking back

Until now, I've never looked back and noticed just how far I've come since I really got started in 2011/2012. I analyzed the mix of my first synth pop work, "Rain" (2012), with my latest, "The Bridge" (2014), and noticed a lot of things:
  • Got rid of the horrible harsh clippings of the vocals
  • Better tuning of notes overall
  • In general, things fit better in stereo and the box sits WAY better in space
  • The mix is brighter and just melds a lot better and is much 'bigger' in a way a simply couldn't achieve back then
  • Synths sound far better and less generic... unique chord progression, much more interest in the percussion

Listen for yourself:

So what do you guys think? Do you tend to go back and compare your old (OLD, heh) mixes with your more recent stuff? Have you been able to taste the fruits of hard work and dedication yourself?

Hey David. Technically you've made more progress than me, and certainly the majority here can better address the growth in the quality of your recordings...here's all I know, you've got a talent for melodic pop. I listened to all your stuff at the 2nd link and I still think "Rain" is your best tune. If I were you, I'd now go back and re-do it. "Pit and patters like an offbeat metronome...I've tried the(a?) way to let the sound take me home" followed by the chorus...that's just great stuff David. Thanks for a great tune.   Jim

I am not sure what you are saying. Of course it sounds better with the second one in your links, but do you have it all flushed out.
Are you asking a question to how a person does the music?
I may have old songs to re-do, but it actually may not be because of the mix. It may have more to do with the audio/interface I was using at the time. As to time spent on an old song, may be worthwhile to the individual, but it may not make the entire song any better in the end. Of course the new recording would sound better because of the equipment used, so to me once again - it is in the total creative process of making the music in the first place.
I can never sound like a complete band again, unless I play all the instruments, which is unlikely in my case.
I can never sound like other people I have played with and be them. I can get close, but never the same.
There are two songs in my signature, one of an actual band (although the recording is just a basic tape the band recording - nothing fancy and tape wears out and it is older) and then another recording in which I may have too much in it, and certainly the third link is anyone else doing the same song at the time they did it like the second link.

If I had to say that my mixes in the past where okay, then I have to say I could always do better, and yes things have been learnt being on this forum, and other things not considered because I probably would never try those and do them. It is a matter of how much time you can spend on the making creative process of music, and to that end, it can end up being a 24 hour a day, 7 days a week - hobby?
Actually I really am not concerned about making any money, because with that, there be even more to do as to socializing all around. I find that since I am not going to play live or travel around doing music, then I just do what I can and the rest will always probably left to people who want to pursue that. I just intend to do what I can do with what I have, and that will be it.

So perhaps there is no answer to the question, the mix was done in the past as it was with what was done and will be done in the future with what it will be and I suppose it can always better depending again perhaps on time spent with any creative.
