loud pop when loading Channel Tools

Hi folks,
I've been getting a REALLY loud "pop" sound whenever I instantiate channel tools or load a project containing Channel Tools. By "loud" I mean loud enough to make me fear for my speakers.

Anyone else?

My specs:
Intel 4930
32 GB Ram
Windows 8.1 64 bit
Sonar X3c 64 bit
Radeon 6700
2 UAD2 cards
RME HDSPe MADI fx feeding a Antelope Orion32 and a Lynx Aurora 16

Thanks
Dean

I'm not getting pops. I put Channel Tools on the master bus and listened. Opened and closed the project. Minimized and maximized the CT GUI. I couldn't get a pop.

    Thanks gswitz.
That's weird. You're using RME gear and Win 8.1 x64 just like me...though the UCX does have a different driver than the MADI fx. The strange part is that it's super easy to replicate here. I can get it by creating a blank project, adding an audio track, recording a bit of silence so the audio engine starts, and inserting Channel Tools. No buses, no fx, no nothing.
Anyway, thanks for checking. I appreciate it.

This sounding familiar to anyone else out there?

I doubled back and tried it on a track rather than a bus and was again unable to replicate.

Can you check the Perf Module and/or your system's resource monitor and do it again? No other plugs are doing this? I have no idea why this would happen but it might shed some more like on the issue for those who might.

Perhaps Channel Tools got slightly corrupted on install?

You should try this with the 64 bit engine OFF, if you haven't already.

I tried for it with the sixty four bit engine on and off.

What os? Do you have the latest device drivers? Often a hardware reset is triggered on loading a new project.

    Hi folks,
    Thanks for the responses.

gswitz - here's a screengrab of tasmgr while I instantiated the plugin:

    This looks OK to me....

Studious - Yep, tried with 64-bit on and off...same behavior.

gswitz - Specs are in the OP, but short answer is Win8.1 64 bit. Latest drivers on everything I can think of (Audio, Video, UAD etc).

Quick question: can one of you folks post the version and size of the Channel Tools DLL so I can compare with what I have? I was wondering about whether the DLL had gotten damaged or corrupted somehow as well.

    Thanks for the help guys.

It is a 64bit version, I have never installed a 32bit version of SONAR on this machine. I could not tell you which version of SONAR it came from. Version X1d Producer Expanded, X2a Producer and X3c Producer are installed.

My DLL is the same as Scooks, think Scook has found your issue.

If not here are a few things to try...

Is 64 bit precision engine turned off? (Preferences -> Driver Settings) as per #7.
What happens when "Always Steam Audio through FX" setting is flipped? (Preferences -> Playback and recording).
What happens when you create a blank project (no template) and load this up?

    Cheers...

Please try searching all your hard drives for that DLL, you may already have the updated DLL it's just that it might be in the wrong place. Otherwise removal/reinstall of the plugin via the Sonar installer will probably be the way to go.

    Hi scook,
Well, I tried the version you emailed me (thanks again, BTW) and it' s doing the same thing. Sounds like I should probably give support a call.

As far as other stuff being out of date, I have the same concern, but I can't imagine how it could be. Like I said earlier, new computer, new Windows install, new Sonar install as of X3b. I can't think of a way I could have gotten old versions on my computer.

Anyway, I'll try support. Thanks again for the help.

I have the same version number as Razorwit, but the file size differs.

    Version: 1.0.1.300
    Date modified is 9/12/2012.
    Size: 2.66 MB (2,792,960 bytes)

Is it possible that as part of the install there is a native compiler that is compiling these DLLs based on the hardware we are installing them on?
That might give a justification for Razorwit and I having one version and Scook and Alex having another.

This is interesting. I haven't had a loud pop, but I have had problems with channel tools. Sometimes it will not come on or work at all. I'll do a little investigating later and look up my dll.

    Hi gswitz,
For a second there the image I thought you were referring to was my avatar image and I was going to say "yes, my default avatar image does make me and my PC seem powerful....(lowers voice dramatically).....mysterious and powerful!!!".

Then I realized that you were probably talking about my task manager snip. It's just a screen grab of my system resources during the period I inserted an instance of Channel Tools. Beeps asked me to put it in to make sure there wasn't any resource hogging going on when I inserted the plug.

That said, just in case you were referring to my avatar image: yes, my default avatar image does make me and my PC seem powerful....(lowers voice dramatically).....mysterious and powerful!!!

    Hi CakeAlexS
I thought I'd found the culprit as well with the DLL thing, but alas, scooks dll does the same thing. Thanks for the questions. I've tried it with 64 bit engine both on and off and in as simple a project as I can create (check earlier in the thread for details). Interesting thought about disabling Always Stream Audio through FX, but I tried it just now and it didn't seem to help.

Thanks for the help and the response.

I have had this happen before, but only with certain plugins in the project (voxengo's glisseq being the worst offender).

For me when the "pop" would happen often the offending channel would not play audio any more, but the other channels would play fine.  This only happens to me on x3c.

    Hi CakeAlexS
Good thought, but still doing it after full reset and rescan. In fact, sometimes it pops and the meter seems to "stick" :

When it does that the meter is pegged but no sound is coming out. If I bypass the plug the meter drops to -inf. Re-enable it, loud pop and the meter sticks like that. I only see that now and again but it sure is weird.

Funny thing is that it's only happening with this one plugin. Everything else seems to work just fine....Waves, UAD, FabFilter...all of it.

So really an uninstall and a reinstall of this plugin is next on the cards. Please run chkdsk on your hard drive before you do this. You might want to have a go at updating your audio drivers and firmware as well.

Alex, yeah, I think you might be right. I'll probably put a call in to Cakewalk support first though. I've called them before and they've been pretty good about fixing me up. But I think an uninstall/reinstall is probably in the cards.

    Thanks
