low budget mixer help -- FIXED--

Hello all,

My first post but have been lurking for sometime reading about this or that. I am new to cakewalk but not new to recording but my porblem now is that I am trying to record using a xenyx802 mixer. I know its not the best but it was cheaper than a patch bay and it would give some phantom power. I have the hookups like this picture:

I currently have an xlr in line 1, my guitar processor in line 3/4, and a roland v drum kit in line 5/6. I am running this all into a delta 44 card. When I record there is a bit of latency coming out of the mixer which is not present if I remove the mixer. Without the mixer I can direct monitor (w/o latency) an input from the delta 44 into my headphones but not through the mixing board.

Is there a setting in music creator that can be changed? The delta asio gives me 2.7 seconds of latency which I know is very low and should not be heard but the mixer gives about a second of delay which is annoying when trying to record drums over guitar tracks.

My desktop specs are as follows: amd 2800+, 768mb ram, and a couple of hard drives.

thanks for the help,

hatch

The delta asio gives me 2.7 seconds of latency

I assume you mean 2.7 milliseconds?
I would connect the V Drums via MIDI and not into the mixer.
    Get some more memory.
I wouldn't think that the mixer would cause a delay; it should be at the speed of electricity since there is no processing to speak of.
    More suggestions to come.

the mixer shouldn't cause any delay - it's almost simultaneous.

you've got mic, guitar and drums connected to the mixer, but you didn't say if there was latency on all of the inputs or which ones.

and you didn't say specifically how you hook things up without the mixer, that might give us some clues as well.

    ok a little more info.

Using the delta, I would put the processor in input 1/2 and then use 3/4 for the v-drums. For some reason, MC does not see input 3/4 on the delta. Perhaps a software limit within MC? So I thought a mixer would save me some time by letting me hook everything up at once to input 1/2. Anyhow, if I run direct into the delta (no mixer involved) from any of these line sources there is no latency when monitoring what I am playing and recording. It appears to be with the mixer.

I will try to change inputs to see if perhaps I received a bad board. I will post back.

    thanks,

I believe I have this worked out for the most part.

I lowered the sample rate in the delta software to 256 down from 1024 and upped the khz from 44100 to 48000. This seemed to lower the latency that I was hearing. Almost perfect now when direct monitoring a track.

    thanks everyone.

    Buffers?
Sample rate would be either 41.1 kHz or 48 kHz, or higher if your sound card suppoted that. Bit depth would be 16 or 24.
    But if it's fixed, great.
By the way, MC will only record a stereo pair or 2 mono inputs simultaneously, which is why you couldn't get 3/4 to work. Unless you have the magic program another user got.

You are right it is the buffer rate. I lowered the buffer rate and upped the sample rate which in turn lowered the latency.

I don't necessarily think when I speak err type.

Me personally i would keep my sample rate at 44,100, since that is CD quality, and then set my bit rate at 24 and my buffering at what you have for recording. Next remember that MC is stereo input only and so the delta 44 is not being utilized as much as if it were attached to Cake SHS or Sonar. The drum machine I would attach VIA USB so I could take advantage of the Midi, but still attached as it is you can use the audio output and that is good as well.

One thing. if you record the guitar, drums and mike at one time you are not getting them all on separate tracks.

Lastly are the speakers and or headphones attached to the mixer? If not then you will get a delay.

make sure everything is done thru the mixer. I had that mixer and a delta 24/96 card and had zero delay. Make sure you use the latest Delta ASIO drivers.

I'd Seize the day but i can't quite reach it!
