RE: Tribute To Phil. Obituary and Challenge. 2006/02/16 08:54:54 (permalink)
Well, I can't talk about Phil. We're very close and honestly, I just don't know what I think about the whole thing. All points that are being made in this thread are valid and I think it's good that we have a thread where we can express our thoughts on the matter.

I wanted to bring up something else. Actually, it's not my own thought, I was talking on the phone the other day with one of the forum members who is very knowledgeable about many things, and he brought up a good point.

This forum is quite unusual as far as internet forums go. There's a real feeling of community here and seriously, I have collected email addresses and even phone numbers of a lot of the regulars here and I consider these people, and everyone else here, my friends. I keep in close touch with quite a few of you "offline".

Anyway, point is, this feeling of community and helpfulness has developed into a "peer-to-peer" tech support network that is unsurpassed in any internet forum that I've been involved in. You ask a question and boom, you've got at least a half dozen people that have the answer. Or if they don't have the answer they might know who does. Point being, they'll help in any way they can. For myself, I've been known to go and download manuals of audio interfaces that I don't own simply so I can answer someone's question. And I know my limitations. I'm not a synth genius like B Rock, or an engineer like Mike Garrett or Ben. But I do know how to get the attention of those people if I think they're more qualified to answer a question that I am.

Trying to get to the point here...can you imagine how many tech support calls that haven't been made to Cakewalk because of this overall feeling of generosity and sharing of knowledge?? I mean, come ON! I would much rather get advice about 24-bit signal paths with engineer-heads like Mike Garrett, Ben and Stuart than make a phone call to the manufacturer of my audio interface or to Cake tech support. Or, how do I tweak this patch in Dimension?? Is there anybody that knows more about this than B Rock, other than perhaps Rene himself??

If "Life As We Know It" (as one of my offline friends put so well) ends here at the forum, Cakewalk will actually have to answer tech support calls that are so readily answered here. Gee...I wonder if anyone in Boston thought of that? I don't think that this spirit of sharing of knowledge will end any time soon, but it has definitely taken a "hit" and there is most definitely a different "feeling" in the air.

I'm not so sure that I, personally, would have started a thread about Middle Eastern politics. I said that to Phil myself. However, if by doing so, this feeling of generosity and helpfulness that is so pervasive on the forum suddenly disappears, not only will Cakewalk have to start doing their own tech support, but many of us will have lost a lot of friends.

My thoughts, and my thoughts only...

My $0.02 US: You reap what you sow.

This forum is for discussions about the creation of music with Project 5. It's not for baiting and trolling.... I don't want this to turn into the coffee house, or KVR at it's worst, and I don't think Cake does either. I think if Phil was really interested in adding constructively to our community he would have acted accordingly and would thus still be here. *shrug*

let's all get over it
it's not a grand and glorious free speech issue. we play here at Cakewalk's discretion. it's their board.
if you want free speech, there are plenty of other choices.

my thoughts exactly. i personally don't dig the enforcement of the new tosa and will only drop in very occasionally to see what's up, but there's kvr, soundclick, and about 1,000,000 politics/philosophy options on the web that one can use. cakewalk's forum is cakewalk's forum and they can do what they want with it.

if i can interject a libertarian point of view, it seems to me like phil kinda sorta WANTED to get banned, like a lot of guys i knew over at the old native instruments open discussion forum (which was completely killed by ni just a couple of months ago). he was warned, and yet he persisted--so he was kicked out. simple cause and effect in my book. i'm sure he's fine and as interesting as ever. if someone who contacts him regularly could guide us to a new location to hear from him i'm sure many of us would jump ship.

as i said, i just went through a much more severe version of this corporate forum meltdown recently, and now that the smoke has cleared, i still have a way of contacting all those guys on a different forum that isn't policed at all. and frankly, it's better for me because i don't feel like i need to self-censor.

some people are sheep some are wolves. if cake says only sheep are welcome here they get no soup from me. :-) if i'm to meditate on this event for analysis i can not find fault in phil or cake. but i am a human being not a dinosaur and will support human behavior over dinosaur behavior until the day i find that i'm no longer a human being. <g>

But do you want a forum where every poster is immediately attacked by wolves?

Guys, just let it rest. Anyone who wants to get in touch with Phil will find a way to do it. And if Phil wants to contact any of us, he'll also know how.

You want Phil's music? Here, there's lots of it:

http://grandtheatre.com/phil

Maybe he'll keep uploading stuff. Maybe he's lurking. Maybe he has better things to do (I know *I* do. I just don't do them).

The funny thing is, Phil would have loved this thread.

To think, at one time P5 was a $429 MSRP app.
