Yes, been a bit nips today...
I had to work outside for an hour or so.
Me and the eldest took my VW Scirocco to a track day at Oulton Park on Wednesday. It was a great day out, thrashing the bollocks out of my motor. Bit of a risk but, WTF!
At one point, my lad brought it back in and smoke was pouring out of the front offside wheel due to the brake pads and disks being too hot. We lifted the bonnet and the engine was steaming hot too... Must have really been going for it during that session. When we come to start it again, half an hour later, it just wouldn't go. Had to wait another 15 minutes or so and eventually got it running again. It appeared that our mistake was stopping the engine as soon as he parked up... Should have left it running just to keep the radiator circuit open. The petrol in the fuel lines up to the injectors simply evaporated and was why it wouldn't start.
Somehow we managed to keep it on track... Just... And we made it home all intact.
Then on Thursday I could here a bit of a strange knocking coming from the front of the car. Couldn't weigh it up... Friday, the same, if not slightly worse. Same again on Saturday... Didn't have to go far... Just across town.
So, today, while it was bright (but nips) I removed the front wheels, had a poke around... checked any linkages and drive shafts and everything seemed okay, to the best of my knowledge (I know less about cars than I do about music).
Put the wheels back on and took it out for another drive. My lad was at his younger brothers, doing some work on one of his bangers, so I was going to as him, again, for his opinion.
No noise now, other than the normal creaks and groans and road noise... Weird, I thought... And then realisation dawned. At least I think it did...
I had had the wheels off... Put them back... Wheel bolts nice and tight... "That's it," I thought... a bloody wheel must have been coming lose, maybe because of the extreme stress and heat of the track day. When I removed the front offside wheel I thought it was a bit easier than I thought to remove them bolts, but I thought it was because I had used a three foot long piece of pipe over the wheel wrench. So, if they were a bit loose, I didn't notice, so, the theory stands, for the moment at least...
TL;DR Take your car to a track and rag the arse off it, it's effing awesome!
