Dub, I have no idea how many Cakewalk users are out there. But it sure seems to me like the ones who have it would be happy to cough up a hundred bucks a year. Especially since most of the users, like it's been said, are grown ups.
Point number 2 Reaper seems to be staying afloat.
Point number three so who would want to buy a d a w? Somebody that doesn't have one. Somebody for which it would make sense to have one. Magix bought Sonny's Vegas Pro. Now they have a viable video program. Maybe somebody like PG music or even Magix could use a full-featured Daw. These people are already software companies. Kind of like Fender who is completely unable to Market an acoustic guitar so they bought Guild.
What number for? Gibson sells guitars and while those are fine guitars it has nothing to do with software. And their company has really had its ups and downs over the last 20 years. Our Premier Guitar Repair Shop recommended a Gibson to me even though they quit doing warranty work. Why? Couldn't get Gibson to pay for it when repairs are finished.

But weren't we doing that four/five years ago (when Roland sold it) and Cakewalk was losing money then?
 
Maybe we should have been "happy to cough up" $200 a year. Or $300. Or $400?. Who knows what it would have taken to keep the ship afloat?
 
Bottom line is you can only milk an existing user base for so long. Somewhere along the way you need to attract a certain number of (net) new customers - and surely that's down to the quality and marketing of the product?

MAGIX has Samplitude and some SONAR users are moving to it. It seems to be even better than Studio One to some who have tried out both.

Well then I stand corrected I didn't know that. Also if I had any interest in joining real world I wouldn't be doing this for a living. 😉

I really don't know why anyone's still debating this now. Cakewalk failed, because it didn't sell enough copies of Sonar. No-one wanted to buy a failed company. That's it.

Exactly.  There are documents on this forum that show SONAR's sales figures for the last six year.  Each year the lose of revenue doubled over the year before.  Why doesn't Gibson sell SONAR?  For the same reason the Edsel failed: SONAR is losing massive amounts of money and no other company will buy it.

I get your point, but it is totally possible that just getting current base to regularly pay annual update isn't enough to get out of red. Most of us were basically doing this and it wasn't enough. Cakewalk needed growtb and didn't get it.

Reaper is staying afloat because it is a much simpler operation with what I would assume to be less costly overhead.

My question was not who would want to buy a DAW, but who would choose of all their options the DAW now labeled as failed with a uset base already moving on in droves. I don't see how the current events would make sonar more attractive to people who were already bypassing. Magix acquisitions are not comparable because they were willing to take on several dead products to acquire one decent product. I love Acid, but sony had neglected it for at least 10 years. Magix already has a powerhouse DAW, so not sure what cakewalk woild give them a sunk ship to compete with own products.

Let's be honest, if there was even the slightest chance of a rescue deal, they would have announced it. If only to limit the numbers defecting to other DAWs.
