Took the plunge and installed W8 on top of W7.

No real issues, had to re-install the Focusrite drivers for the Liquid 56 though.

Also installed Classic Shell, using its W7 patch and all is well. So far only one oldish programme  - VideoEdit 4.1 - refuses to work, but not a show stopper.

Cheers,
Jerry

I take back what I said.

Like the old 12 bar, i woke up one morning, turned the pc on and

- no mouse
- no keyboard
- no Ctl Alt Supp
- complete freeze

And that for several forced boot ups.

Tried a "Replace" restore which effectively wiped my HD.

Prolly user error, maybe not, but it took me 3 days to re-install.

And yes i had an image (Acronis 2013) but sods law, corrupt .......

So here I am back to W7, happy as a pigvin the what-not, no latency as such.

No more W8 for me, thanks MS.

Jerry

Interesting Thread. I just installed Win8, more out of curiosity than anything else. Quite liking it so far despite the extra mouse clicks

I experienced the same as you, Jerry. I turned on my DAW and the keyboard and mouse didn't react. I tried a couple other beaten up keyboards I had lying around and but still no response. However, on the third restart, it started working and it haven't happened since. But I have had some time off lately so I haven't been working on my DAW so much since i upgraded.

I did a clean install after making a current disk image of my OS disk - in two places. It needed tidying up but didn't want to risk too much down time. If it all went south I'd be up and running in 20 minutes. So after screwing up my Novation stuff (before installing all my plugs), I did it once more and except that one incident with the keyboard and mouse it's been a pretty good experience. Fingers crossed! So far everything seems really smooth and stable, Win8 has some cool and welcome new features, can't wait to stress test it! But I'm keeping my Win7 disk image close at all times.

Now it is several weeks later and I've had lots of time to play with Windows 8. Here are some things I fixed or worked on:

I upgraded my keyboard and mouse because they did not have Windows 8 drivers! Go figure. That fixed the SetPoint problem.

The key for the Win8 Media Package arrived so I enabled that in Win8. That's makes my system display as 'Windows 8 Pro with Media Center'. I don't have a TV or any use for that so I will just let it be there for the future, I haven't even started Media Center yet.

I tried to enable the Microsoft email account, but I ran into problems outlined here:

http://www.eightforums.co...-my-local-account.html

I have not used any Windows 8 APPs yet and I unpinned them all from my start screen.

I added the Classic Shell to start up my system on the desktop and get me back the start button. I made a simple skin for it, described here:

http://www.classicshell.n...opic.php?f=17&t=17

I solved the Acronis 2013 problem, as outlined here:

http://forum.acronis.com/.rum/38423#comment-121954

I tried to remove 8dot3 shortnames. The process was not successful, as outlined here:

http://www.eightforums.co...shortname-removal.html

The only problem remaining is that I lack a proper Windows 8 driver for my WIFI USB adapter, but the Win 7 driver seems to work OK.

There are 2 errors I see in the Event list after a restart. One is a DHCP error probably due to the Win 7 WIFI driver.  'The driver \Driver\WudfRd failed to load' is due to the WUDF driver starting later manually. I'm going to ignore these for now.

A few boot drivers fail to load:
"The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) did not load:
dam
EhStorClass
JSWPSLWF"

dam is Desktop Activity Monitor - not needed for me
EhStorClass is for Extended IEEE 1667 Support - things like smart cards
JSWPSLWF id the Win 7 driver for my WIFI adapter.

I keep checking the Netgear site for Win 8 drivers. There is a Beta available, but reports I've read about it are not encouraging. I downloaded it, maybe some day I'll try it out.

I've encounter zero problems with any audio application.

Seriously cool setup advice on installing Windows 8:

It's been a while and I thought I'd post an update.

I have read several people mention that it might be better to do a clean install, while I did an in-place install because of the amount of software I had already installed.

I have not encountered any problems of any sort in the last few months.

I have had one or two crashes from a WiFi adapter driver, but I now have Windows 8 drivers for that.

Acronis software has been the worst offender, with each update breaking something new, but I have workarounds.

So my final recommendation to update to Windows 8 is an unqualified 'Yes'.

I've not had many problems these last few days, so I tried to turn on the Apps and set up an email account, this was a disaster, and I described it here:
http://www.eightforums.com/user-accounts-family-safety/17310-setting-up-live-email-account-destroyed-my-local-account.html#post171092

(((Update ... as of 04/30/2013. Still have one copy of that W8 to install either over a XP-PRO machine or a W7 machine. Though I know the XP-PRO machines probably have a limited time span, I am more likely to update the W7 machine, which has some minor issues. On reboot whenever it feels like, it won't load any display drivers and completely ignore the hardware and the software. One last bothersome issue, is W7 and Ventrillo are a pain and Windows will not return the drivers to its proper state when Ventrillo closes ... and you have to go turn off this, turn on that, change this and then change that ... go have a few smokes ... have some sex ... go have another smoke ... then ... the sound might be back on your computer speakers instead of the headset. The Ventrillo folks say that both W7 and W8 are a hassle, though a bit less than the previous stuff.)))

I will not use, under any conditions, any software for email ... I only do "webmail" ... why? ... it's the biggest trash dumpster there is, and still a serious issue and Microsoft will not clean it up, because some of the processes in there used, are exactly the same used by many spammers ... which means, that, in essence, you are ALWAYS downloading trash to your computer ... and trash that is bringing in links over links and looking at your computer even more ... and SPECIALLY on a music computer, you are inviting that more resources be taken away from you, because these things do their own thing underneath your connection and by the time you know you have a problem, it's too late!

The other issue ... I did not like that Microsoft ... forced me to login to their website in order to install Windows 8 ... which I declined. The information does have my email address, and that's it. I did my best to ensure they did not have/get any information off that link. Nto sure why Microsoft would try to do this to you ... and not appreciate your privacy ... all of a sudden with these cloud things, privacy is gone even further ... and do not allow yourself to be deceived!

This was the funny part, about "security", when these folks would tell you ... "they will never ask your password" ... but they don't tell you that they DON'T NEED IT ... because those support folks are on the other side of the security wall anyway, and they can look at your email any second they damn well please ... !!! ... just like Microsoft can look at your computer any damn time they please ... !!! ... and their asking for your information is inapropriate and in general, if you run a network and you want security ... improper ... and you won't do it!

Aside from that, I have had no issues!

I installed W8 for a second time, and it went better than the first time.

But i hate the new interface, my latency is bigger, so i formated and re-installed W7.

Feels more normal, natural etc. Twice bitten, and third time VERY shy.

Not convinced (and i have a W8 capable machine), but each to his own......

Cheers,
Jerry

@arachnaut - what latency do you get? Have you tried DPC Latency and Latency Mon to check? It is a lot of issues with Nvidia drivers AFAIK.

I installed Win8 on my DAW, and the installation process went nicely. Had some problems with the legacy FW driver, so since my Tascam FW1884 is FW based I had to get that working. After some digging I got it working also :)

But still, the Win8 would not get the same low latency as Win7 in my DAW. There are a few pro-audio forums which is discussing this. (I think it has something to do with the way audio has been prioritized in the OS - but I havent digged into it)

Note: DPC latency checker does not work properly with Win8 yet, so it will show about 1000us latency.
Latency Mon is much better to use to see which drivers and processes causing the latency.

Aha that I didn't know.

Third time lucky then ?

From the creator of the program
http://www.thesycon.de/deu/latency_check.shtml

Windows 8 Compatibility:[font="arial, helvetica, verdana; line-height: normal"] The DPC latency utility runs on Windows 8 but does not show correct values. The output suggests that the Windows 8 kernel performs badly and introduces a constant latency of one millisecond which is not the case in practice. DPCs in the Windows 8 kernel behave identical to Windows 7. The utility produces incorrect results because the implementation of kernel timers has changed in Windows 8 which causes a side effect with the measuring algorithm used by the utility. Thesycon is working on a new version of the DPC latency utility and will make it available on this site as soon as it is finished.
