the tv series?..

as far as the books are concerned i gave up... the books are padded with irrelevancies as far as the eyes can read and the plot gets progressively slower as each volume progresses such that after 5 books, the end is nowhere in sight... given the age and productivity of the author i fear his demise before we know which butler did it.

I thought this was going to a thread about drum stools.

Oh no. In those days they used other kinds of stools :o). Some "drumming" was occasionally heard, though, I guess.

My son is hooked on it, too. I haven't watched one episode yet, as I've banned all series with a continuing story.

I'm enjoying both the tv series and the books.  Some of the acting is excellent (especially Tyrion Lannister) in the series, and they've embellished the dialogues in many places to exploit this nicely.

The books I treat differently from your regular series (such as Robin Hobb's 'Apprentice' troligy).  In a way I'm almost reading them as historical texts, and as a great treatment of the politics of fuedalism.  If you are interested I'd recommend playing Crusader Kings 2 too.  Nothing like a regular PC RTS but extremely fascinating as you steer your family through the medieval world.  There's even a Westeros mod so you can play Lannister/Stark/Frey etc as well.

Thoroughly enjoyed the books. The TV series is a hoot and a half.

Totally disagree about the books.  I've read all but the last one twice and hunger for more.  This stuff is the gold standard of fantasy fiction.

But I do agree about the concern for the author's age.  He's in his mid-sixties, and at the rate he's going, it could be ten or twelve years before the final book is released.  One of us may be dead by then, in which case I'll be really pissed ... unless of course I'm the one that's dead.

Yes to the above. Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) is an amazing actor. The casting overall has been excellent.
Loved the books, and yes he does get more verbose and technical with each release, but he seems to have a pattern of action-strategy-action so i'm sure that eventually things will get wrapped up in book 7...

now i want a HBO version of China Mieville's books...

Hmm...  Never heard of Game of Thrones!  Sounds like I'll have to look for the books...

Great series on TV.  And yes, I find the books keep getting bigger, rather than funneling down.  It is like the hydra - everytime a plot line ends two more pop up.  And he adds lots of extraneous stuff - it seemed the 2nd or 3rd book was full of hot meat that dribbled down everyone's chin, etc. etc.  But still a nice read.  The TV series slims it down nicely.  And great actors,  great dialogue and a nicely set up world.
