  • I fixed an amp and then did a re-amp off a bass part

A friend of my son's left an old Fender 15B in my garage. I finally got it into my studio and found that the input jack had the tip part of a guitar plug stuck in the socket.
So I ordered a new one from Amazon and replaced it! I had to take the amp apart, unsolder the old plug and replace it. I actually did it right!
So then I was working on the bass part to my last song posted "Burnin Coals" and decided to try re-amping it.
I have a Steinberg UR44 and it worked great for this. I put a cheap bass mic on the Fender amp and recorded it. The sound was much more round and better controlled than going direct with a VST sim.

Anyway, I am happy about fixing an amp and doing a re-amp with it. Fun stuff for me.

It feels great doesn't it. That's why I roll my own. Now on to the VOX.

Hi John, well I replaced the tube in my Vox VT30 and it did not fix the hum. So I can still use it live or cranked up when recording to reduce the apparent hum.  The amp sound really good so I won't trash it. I think I may want to try building a tube amp some time this year.

If you do, I'll provide what help I can. I'd advise starting with a kit for your first build. Going from scratch is much more difficult.

He John, I would like some advice on a starter kit.  I need to budget for so let me know what you think would be good.
Thanks much.

If it were me, I would look at the kits from Mojotone. They cost a bit more, but the components are of a higher quality than most. They are also put together with mostly American parts.

Start with something simple that you will actually use. Lots of guys start with a Champ because it's simple, but never use it because it didn't have enough power. But don't try and get started on an AC30 build.

A 5w Champ might be fine in a bedroom / small studio.
Simple, and it's the front door to a lot of great Fender amps.
It's going to be my next project, but not for a while.

Here's an example Champ schematic from Schematic Heaven.
