BTW - So far my internet hasn't dropped, but I won't really know until tomorrow morning if the "provisioning" is what was causing my intermittent issues.

That would be a bad modem profile with the incorrect parameters. The best solution is to remove the modem from the terminal and then re-provision it again.

I had line issues with Comcast, and knew that from my experience and modem readings and they ignored me. I sent all the settings and it's definitions to the State Attorney General in Olympia, with a nice complaint about the lack of service, and one person trying to sell me telephone 5 times in the same call to complaint about the service. Ignored.  The next morning there were 2 technicians at my place at 8AM, and they replaced the whole wiring in the whole building that was over 20 years old, and the two techs were astounded that the folks in support could not see the bad numbers, and said that they would escalate it to see who the folks were I talked to 4 different times.

I showed the tech the numbers from my computer, he checked one more number and went ... wow ... they did not listen to you when you said that? ... I said ... nope ... you are here because of my complaint with the State of Washington ... he said yeah ... my manager said get here now and fix it! I showed him the complaint. He was not happy ... and said ... that's the kind of service that makes us techs look bad, and sometimes we don't see that stuff.

Still have some connection issues, but mostly it is Comcast keeping an eye on all the streaming and making sure I can not play 2 World of Warcraft accounts at the same time!

Wow...  I have to actually go into the Comcast office tomorrow (by the Vancouver Mall) to get a new cable modem (one that has a wireless router included).  If they upgraded where I am (Prune Hill), are you sure they haven't done it where you are as well Pedro?

This is older area and the poles and hanging wires are still around ... most areas that can get the better numbers are underground where you can use the bigger and better wire than the old reliable RG5 (something like that!).

I have my own modem, btw ... but these days, all cable providers are taking that ability away from customers, because they want the control and to setup the loop on the modem that allows them to keep track of all your data! It's also easier for the terminals, that only have to worry about one modem and not anything else that required a different set of information and parameters.

Maybe someone might know if there is a setting somewhere I need to make????

I have a new Arris DOCSIS-3.0 modem, and a Netgear N600 Wireless router (602.11 a/b/g/n) capable of up to 300Mbps speed.

As Craig pointed out, Comcast upped my internet speed to 50Mbps. On two hardwired connected PCs, I am actually getting 50-55Mpbs (down) /10Mbps (up). Can't complain so far.

The issue though is with wirelsss connections I am getting 20-25 Mpbs (yea, I know this is still pretty good). But Craig indicated he is getting 45-Mpbs 'wirelesssly', therefore I am wondering why I am not achieving an improvement for the WiFi connections. I believe I have the hardware to support it, but it just isn't happening. Any thoughts from you techies?

Hmm...  I was still having issues so I returned the cable modem I had for a new DORY (still made by Arris) which has wireless networking built in.  Unfortunately, that didn't completely fix the dropping issue (I think the lines outdoors have an issue), but now I'm getting weird download speeds when I test.  ONCE I've gotten back into the 40's, but the rest are all over the map even down to 5.5mbps!  The test looks normal, then kind of jerks down to some lower number at the end of the download test.  Weird...

As for Ken's issue, you're problem might be with the wireless device on your PC not being set up correctly.  Check to see if you're connecting at "n" or "g" (avoid "a" regardless of whether that meant the old specification or if it's supposed to be "ac," the new specification, since it hasn't been finalized yet - also avoid "b" because it's definitely old).  One more thing to check is whether you're connected at 2.4GHz or 5 (the N600 is a Dual Band router).  If you're using 2.4GHz, then you are subject to lots of interference from others, cordless phones and, especially, microwaves.

To summarize, your problem probably lies in either not having a good enough wireless device on your PC or not having it set up correctly to use all the bandwidth your wireless router can deliver.

Regarding my Wifi connection speeds being slower that the direct Ethernet connections to my router, I did find one suggestion that has improved my Wifi connection speeds. In the WiFi Advanced Settings of my Netgear router there is a WMM (Wifi MultiMedia) setting and QOS (Quality Of Service) Setup option. This setting allows you to prioritize specific sites/applications in the Wifi connections. I disabled this feature and it improved the Wifi speeds by about 10Mpbs across my Wifi devices (e.g., laptop PC, Android phone, iPad3). So far I have not seen any negative affects of disabling this feature. While my Ethernet connections are attaining 55Mbps-down/11Mbps-up, the Wifi still does not come close.  But instead of 10-25Mbps I was getting, I am now getting 20-30Mpbs-down with 10Mpbs-up. Wifi is generally more sporadic than the Ethernet connections and seems to vary day-by-day, hour-by-hour. I just thought I would pass this along in case anyone is experiencing slower Wifi speeds. Something to at least try.

So, removing "Quality of Service" improves the quality of service!  Figures, eh?

Good catch, Craig. I didn't see that one.

The Bapu
(is a wanker)

And it's all my telco's fault.

DSL will always be slow ... because of their setup (for one thing) and due to the fact that it is your phone line and that phone line was "split" to be able to handle DSL and the phone company is not spending a nickel on upgrading that phone line at all!

It will likely cost you more than what you are paying now, but you should be able to get Internet off Time Warner where you are at. I don't think you are in a Charter area at all.

Hope this helps

Verizon offers Fios to me but I have to assume I'd lose my dslextreme email address and just the plug vendors alone would take me three years to cut over to another email address.

You have your own website?

Change your address permanently .... I use @pedrosena.com for all "important" and "legal" information, because regardless of who the provider is, I can still use my email ... and forward it to wherever I want!

I do use the Comcast email, but it is not used for "official" anything at all because of the fact that I might not be there tomorrow, for example.

All your business cards and stuff should have your business address and you can forward those to anywhere you want on the same moment you switch providers ... much easier to control! AND NOT LOSE the email!
