From what I've been reading, W8 has changed the way hardware interrupts are handled, resulting in better overall efficiency (read: battery life) at the expense of increased DPC latency. A lot of people are reporting 10x DPC overhead compared to Windows 7.
However, Noel's
blog post on Windows 8 benchmarking tests with SONAR suggest that it's generally more efficient, reporting between 8% and 30% less CPU, 8% less RAM and up to 78% less disk than Windows 7. He thinks Windows 8 will do just fine as a DAW platform, but has reservations about Metro.
But the DPC latency is a concern, especially if there's nothing you can turn off to lower it.
