When you hear all the praise for Thatcher, just remember the people - like my Uncle - whose jobs were destroyed by her policies....

He was the captain of the General Belgrano.
I would not take that personally ... may have been hard for some and others, but ALL of us had one or two of those instances in our life ... and in America, Reagan started the killing of all unions way back when ... and making sure that "American" workers do not have a voice in anything ... and mis-vote everywhere because they would not have a "voice", like the unions did.

While I never had that fortune, or misfortune, depending on how one looks for it, in the end, I'm ok, and we all survive and go back to reading Spike, or Neddie!

Or as Reagan used to say ... let them smoke dope and I will win all the elections!

In the end, we didn't care that much or we would have done something about it!
And just so you know, for about a third of America, you know what the American Dream is? ... your "house" is a beatup, used motor home, or double wide ... and that's it. Exactly like the snails ... the only good thing is that you can move with it ... when the job goes to the next state!

Yeah ... that's a dream alright!

sharke The sheer bloody minded hysteria and triumphant celebration coming from the left over this old lady's death is nothing short of disgusting

And you won't do that for your own hero's and names? ... Ohhh sureeee!!!!

It's time you stop, please.

Many of us came from different countries, and I came from a Dictatorship in Portugal, and you have no idea what you are talking about ... and then we got to see a military coup in Brazil ... and these things were far harsher and difficult than your crying about some political bullmerde!

And with comments like yours, you are condenming the very same thing that you yourself would do! Some "democratic" ideal for an upper class! And screw the rest!

Lately I have been surprised by reading the recent obituaries of persons I had thought had died long ago.

Maggie was still alive yesterday?

Who would have guessed?

On a related note, Keith Richards still thinks he's alive.

And much to our consternation ... he still thinks he can play guitar!

As Jon has said, the media has been amazingly respectful, the hotbed of pinky leftism the BBC has eulogised her about the same as they did the Queen Mother;

Thatcher was someone of great standing, especially outside the UK, and she played a notable part in helping the Eastern bloc countries achieve independence; she also signed the Anglo-Irish agreement which helped pave the way for peace (though later said she regretted it and woujld have changed her mind if possible); and undoubtedly the unions here had too much power and political influence and needed some taming.
unfortunately she also supported apartheid and Pinochet; took her dislike of trade unionism to dictator-like ends by utterly decimating heavy industries in this country; laid the foundations for the current economic crisis by selling off council houses, not letting councils use the proceeds to build more, and altering how banks and building societies offered mortgages; presided over the largest increase in wealth inequality seen in any country ever during the 80s; flogged off our national assets to private companies which means now billions of pounds of revenue leaves the Treasury and lines the pockets of shareholders; laid the foundations for the piecemeal break-up of the NHS; and most importantly, and most difficult to express, created an atmosphere of individualism and personal gain which has severely fragmented society in this country.

if I tell you that another forum i go on frequently has a thread called 'Ding dong, the witch is dead', you can see that here is an oasis of calm and respectfulness!

That about covers it in full.

Excellent post.

Over here, I'd go for someone who could get things half right.

And I love Dore, tho I don't think I'd vote for him unless I had a horrible etch that needed scratched.

"Give me liberty, or give me death."   That's how I feel about it too.

No government, be it right, left, is without its own brand of tyranny and oppression.  Freedom is for the lions.  For me personally, I'd rather be a starving, lonesome, individual on the brink of death; then a happy worker.

But I understand why most of the world, would rather be, "a happy worker."

A world without government, is a world without war, without money, without nations, and without reason to kill.
