Well? Is it snake-oil or a must have?  -  is it better than Magnetic and Vintage Warmer...

I got VCC and was underwhelmed. Though I do like the grouping facilities and VTM is similar.

I guess it's a case of get the demo and hope to come to a conclusion before the special deals @ $169  lapse.

I've only used tape a few times in the studios years ago so don't consider me an authority but the VTM is very nice. Close to UA, but imo Nebula programs still has a slight edge over them both.

I never got on with Magnetic, nothing like tape at all but people seem to like using it for a coloration effect, most likely EDM. I  like Waves for tracking, mainly drums & gtrs but not for mastering, too much eq coloration & too harsh when pushed. 
Reelbus is one of my favorites. I'd suggest getting that too, again more for color/ EDM but the 'reel' & 'clean' are nice & usable on the master.

As you say try the demo, that's really the only way too see if it's something your projects would benefit from or to get your money out of.
If you didn't like VCC you may not care for this either. It's not snake oil & not a cure for poor mixes.

Only using it on a project right. Have not taken the time to do a detail comparison between all my schtuff. It's subtle in the way VCC is subtle. 


Like Carl I've been recorded to tape very little compared to digital (i.e. ADAT and then SONAR). Maybe I was expecting HUGE magic. VTM is not that.

Just out of curiosity I checked the output levels when active and bypassed. There is a slight gain at most settings even when the input and output controls are linked. 

After correcting for that the results are even more subtle...

So, not convinced yet. Time to try it on a big mix. Shame the linked controls are not accurate, it could add up to a hill of beans over 20 tracks or so

When bypassing you'll notice a level difference whether it's linked or not & both in / outs are set at 0db.
I believe the level change is typical when you're driving tape,  I'm guessing they allowed for it.

Thanks for the tip about Reelbus - that one's certainly not a subtle effect, great for putting a sparkle on a mix and similar to Magnetic as you have pointed out.

My point about the small gain with VTM active as opposed to bypassed, or switched out in Sonar, is that it is difficult to decide if the effect has added value if that extra gain is making it stand out. Turning off link and reducing the output to balance the levels - even by as little as 0.5db - can help make it more of an objective exercise. 

So far I have been fairly conservative by keeping the VU around the zero mark, so I can understand that the effect will be reasonably subtle, and have no problem with it. I can tell the difference, but I'm not always preferring the active over the bypassed. 

Next step (tomorrow) will be to slam the meters and I expect the subtlety to go out the window at that point :-)
