Just been reading an article where the writer suggests copying a kick drum onto 3 seperate tracks and working with them each seperately for fundamental, a "pressure point" one octave above, and also higher frequcny harmonics.

Sounded a bit like overkill - what do You do to get your kick just right?

Here is the article:  http://www.mixedbymarcmozart.com/2014/10/02/mixing-kicks-real-kick-drums-808-909-subkicks-mix/

It's possible to obsess about anything I guess.

Being about to obsess to the "right degree" and knowing when enough is enough..... that's the beginning of knowledge.

For some genres it makes life a little easier. I had to do that for a mix of one of . My son's songs . He used a very sub heavy kick that totally sounded fine in his headphones but was overwhelming on speakers capable of such frequencies. He only had the stems with him so we were kind of stuck. By splitting the kick into three, I could pull the sub back some yet keep some of the extreme lows required for the genre. I also was able to use a transient shaper and eq to create a more defined sound in upper and mid bass ranges. Would never go through this each time but it is a good technique to know.

I've copied a kick to another track before to EQ it differently and blend it back in, but it isn't something I would do everytime either.

I don't do much work on kick drum on my tracks but Saltline has recently released Korzenie kick, a free kick drum creator VST synthesizer plugin for Windows.

I'd most likely use two mics if I was really worried about it, but some equalizers are better than others at sound-shaping (I'm a huge fan of the really-affordable IIEQPro by DDMF).  If this was a digital drumkit I'd try to find a sample that sits well in the mix first, but sometimes you're just trading one kind of "obsession" for another if you spend a ton of time clicking through samples...

I've been processing the 'In' and 'Out' mics in BFD for several years.

You can really home in on the beater click and the 'meat' separately.

I haven't copied the same track to three, but I definitely extract midi using audio snap and add a kick from a drum synth. When I record live there is almost never room for two kick mics.

I reserve that degree of effort for shakers.
