Snowed hard all day and all night yesterday, accompanied by 25 MPH easterly winds. Woke to a white-out this morning. My wife runs a horse yard about a mile and a half from our house, so we set off early in the 4x4 to get the dozen or so horses and a small flock of sheep fed and watered.
All surrounding roads are blocked, so none of the owners could get to the yard. We followed the snow plough tracks..for about 200 yards..it had stopped at the next road turning, given up and turned back. drifts are 6 feet high in places. So we dumped the car and set off again on foot, me dragging a bag of sheep feed.
Had to leave the road eventually and trekked across the fields, got there in about 90 minutes. 2 hours of sorting out the horses and mucking out stables, then 90 minutes back.
Just got back home and had becan sarnies and tea, got to do it all again in about an hour.
Luckily some local farmers are getting busy with tractors and telehandlers, hoisting the snow into the fields, so the road might be walkable all the way this time.
It's a good life, if you don't weaken.
