Snowed hard all day and all night yesterday, accompanied by 25 MPH easterly winds. Woke to a white-out this morning. My wife runs a horse yard about a mile and a half from our house, so we set off early in the 4x4 to get the dozen or so horses and a small flock of sheep fed and watered.

All surrounding roads are blocked, so none of the owners could get to the yard. We followed the snow plough tracks..for about 200 yards..it had stopped at the next road turning, given up and turned back. drifts are 6 feet high in places. So we dumped the car and set off again on foot, me dragging a bag of sheep feed.

Had to leave the road eventually and trekked across the fields, got there in about 90 minutes. 2 hours of sorting out the horses and mucking out stables, then 90 minutes back.

Just got back home and had becan sarnies and tea, got to do it all again in about an hour.

Luckily some local farmers are getting busy with tractors and telehandlers, hoisting the snow into the fields, so the road might be walkable all the way this time.

It's a good life, if you don't weaken.

Apparently there are about 500 cars stranded all over the area. Many people camped out in the nearby town hall last night. We passed several abandoned vehicles on our expedition. The wind is easing down a bit now, but I don't see this snow going anywhere for days.

Yes, you must be High(lander) to want to deal with that!

The snow does look purdy from here though - heh.

I saw it on the news here, hope you have power?!

Yes Alex, we were lucky this time. Things are pretty bad just across the water in Ireland though, many thousands without power.

Beautiful and sunny outside today, but the temperature isn't set to rise much above 2 or 3 degrees C, so all this snow ain't going to melt. I fear this week's work is going to be wiped out.

Sounds like an excuse for the Irish to drink some whiskey.  Oh wait...
