Started by going/playing every bass I could get my hands on...
.

Now that's the best advice I've read. :)

Hey guys, I received my new Ibananez GSRM20 (white pearl, rosewood fingerboard, mahogany body) and spent some time adjusting the action and intonation.  It plays and sounds great.  My big hands have no trouble on the smaller neck and running it direct and through a little tube mic pre is quite and punchy.  They did a price match at $149 and have no tax, no shipping and a 2 year warranty.  They can ship out of Reno for us here in California so the ground shipping can be pretty quick.  My bass had to come from New York and it took 4 days even through that big winter storm that hit last week.

There are some mods like tuner and pot/knob replacement that can be done to this bass.  There is a great bass forum at
TalkBass.com
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f108/

that has a whole section on the Mikro series basses.

So for now on, I am going to try real bass on my tunes.  Very happy camper today!

That's a great price, the cheapest I can find that bass over here is £199 (about $280)

Great question and don't feel bad for asking it. Although expensive instruments are nice, there's nothing wrong with lesser expensive instruments. The Squier stuff will sound fine for what you are trying to do.

I had a Yamaha bass as my first, and to be honest, it sounded great. I think I paid $249 for it in about 1999.

+1 on the Yamaha... I have one, damn nice bass guitar. Inexpensive but nice quality.

Good to know - that's one of the basses I've been considering for my tiny little wife, but I'm taking into account that I'll be using it to record and I have huge hands.

A friend of mine has one of those.. she thought it a bit nasally and twangy in tone so i replaced the strings with d'adarrios ground wounds.. and now is like a p bass with meatballs!.. really beefs it up, so if looking for a vintage tone, worth a try... plays real nice though

I bought my wife one of these:

Cause I liked the color. Now that color is on sale cause I may be the only one who liked that color.

It sounds great. It's gas to play because it uses a Baritone guitar scale length.

It's lighter than air.

My wife finally likes playing bass!!!

anyways...

best regards,
mike

still a longer scale than a strat :).. and tbh, since it will take any P type pickup, and can put pressure wounds, ground wounds or flats you can get some serious thump out that tiny bass.

Looks like that pretty much settles it for me. I've had my eye on them since we saw one at GC last December. My wife dug the little Mustang quite a bit, though. But overall, I feel we might be better off w/ this one.

That leaves my wife's other criteria - it has to be red.
This will have to be the first time I'm buying an instrument that's not black or white. :s
