Sorry Jim, I wasn't trying to compare you to a cleaning person ( not that there 's anything wrong with that). You're at least up there with an honest contractor  ;)

RandallB, my initial post was directed to millzy, who, in a previous thread

http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2686460

had absolutely recommended the OP to spend some money for a consultation with Jim, but then, when he himself encountered a problem with his new self-built system and new interface, requested (and received) assistance here in the forum:

http://forum.cakewalk.com/fb.ashx?m=2686475

Now, I certainly don't begrudge millzy for consulting Jim or for recommending Jim to others (although I kinda wonder why millzy didn't just take his system and interface in to Vin in Melbourne for help). Nor do I begrudge Jim for charging for his time.

What I do begrudge millzy and Jim for should be very apparent and clear, so I don't think I need to explain further.

I note from your initial post above that you had joined the praise Jim bandwagon even before receiving your new system from him. Now, I don't really begrudge anyone for going the pre-built route, for whatever reasons. And I'm sure the system you purchased from Jim works fine and that Jim will provide capable support to you for it down the line. So I trust you won't ever be needing to ask for free assistance here.

Sorry to hear about your sprained ankle. Maybe if you would stop putting your foot in your mouth...

My how the tone changes when presented with facts!

Foot in mouth? Do you know what that means?  Obviously not. Interesting how you love to end your posts with meaningless sound bites.

I've actually had contact with Jim in the past, via email, for help with accesories, advice on hardware etc. Never was charged. Never signed any non disclosure agreement. ( never signed any agreement for the pc either) This was before I had given him a $.  My praise was for the great service I received. Why is that a problem?

You obviously have an axe to grind here. Fine. Grind away. You only show your bias in doing so. As a working pro I recognise the value of Jim's services. I haven't seen anyone who has used his services that has a negative opinion. Lotsa trolls seem to have a problem though. Funny that...

Hobbling off to the studio for a day of problem free computer use.

Sorry for feeding the troll guys. It's kinda like spanking a puppy. You don't want to do it- but sometimes it has to be done. I just get really sick of anon jerks posting crap about people who have worked hard to build a quality business/service.

There's no shame in working.
Doesn't matter what particular line of work (cleaning, technical, medical, contractor, consultant, etc)

My participation in Cakewalk forums goes back 15+ years.
I wound up "In the business" because I was spending many hours a day making recommendations/etc.
We live in a world where folks have to make a living.  I'm no different in that regard.
I could be wrong, but I doubt my friend Goddard works for free.
If he's wealthy enough to do so, I applaud his success.

In this case, a client contacted us to solve a specific issue.
We solved said issue... and the client was happy and mentioned it publicly.
That knowledge came from many hours of experience.
I make my living via that knowledge/experience.
Nothing more... nothing less

Yeah right.

Look, I wasn't trying to deprive Jim of his livelihood. But I was under the impression that he'd already been paid by millzy for the consult, so I saw no harm in inviting millzy, who'd benefited from others' freely given advice here concerning his system latency problem, to pass along the favor.

It was my understanding these forums were for the free exchange of information. Apparently I'm mistaken, as it seems some information isn't free or to be exchanged. But then again, I'm not the one here with a commercial agenda.

Jim, you might want to caution your clients not to list their system specs in their sigs, wouldn't want any of your secret sauce leaking out into public.

Funny how the term "troll" keeps popping up in your posts RandallB....

as the kids say  LOL!

If it walks like a troll and talks like a troll, it's probably a troll...

You may have forgotten you were the one who entered a thread praising Jim and tried to instigate some Sh!te.

Millzy got exactly what he was looking for... and you didn't personally benefit from it.
Got it...

What's your real name Goddard (Sandman)... and what do you do for a living?

I built my last one myself but tech has changed alot. I'm too busy *working* to troll around internet forums all day looking for info. (On the board tonight because I sprained my ankle and am stuck on the couch) I need my tools to get the job done, not make me feel like a big man. Having someone else build me a custom box with proven compatability parts- and my build did need extra work-install my software/samples, apply bios/os tweaks, burn in/stress test the components, make a backup file and talk me through the system. It cost me less than $100 more than my local shop would assemble one for. They wouldn't load my my DAWs and samples for me either. I also saved $99 on my audio interface over my local shops. Looks like a good deal to me. But what do I know? I'm actually a guy who uses his services...

Nothing wrong with that but it does come at a premium and only you know if it's worth the extra expense or not. Common sense..., although I have to say that I'm completely taken by surprise that a local (Canadian) builder was not able to better Jim's offerings (with the inevitable extra shipping and duty charges). How did that work out for you?

It does go against the spirit of a peer-to-peer forum, don't you think? Not that I have a problem with it..., except when open participation by all is hampered by fan clubs and the likes. The "troll" qualifier has been abused/misused lately and is really getting old. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, whether it's supportive or not.

Here's an idea.., a distinct forum that allows vendors such as yourself to generate business opportunities could be created, where interested members know in advance that these services are not free (as it should be).
