Good day luminaries... Got worn out on staying with WinXP so I've just upgraded the DAW to Win 7.0. M-Audio had the Delta 44 drivers available so I wasn't concerned. Not surprising that I tried to record tonight on Sonar 5.0PE and have had the audio engine stop a few times and I heard some annoying low level Rice Krispie type sounds. Would it be consensus here that Sonar 5.0 won't work on Win 7.0 ? Are any using 5.0 on Win 7.0 ? Don't get me wrong as I have no prob upgrading. I just want to be sure that it's absolutely time to retire 5.0PE...just as I did all other versions since Cakewalk Home 3.0. Thank to all.... EDIT: so sorry about the Firefox text mess eye sore. Downloading the demo as we speak.

One thing I can say Quazelar, is that you are not one to quit on a piece of software. It's time to retire it.

Upgrade upgrade upgrade.....you know it's for the best!

And thank you for giving us the phrase "Rice Krispie type sounds"....I will be using that myself when the occasion arises

I'm still running PE v4 on Win XP Pro.  Since the consensus is to upgrade then I'm ready!  Just send me some $$$ for a new DAW and the upgrade and I'll install it!

Check out the demo, that should give you a good idea of what to do. I don't see a reason why Sonar 5 shouldn't work on Win7 but perhaps it doesn't.

Either way, you're missing out on a lot - including a good learning curve - but not upgrading

The Maillard Reaction

Now that I feel like I'm stuck back on v8.5 I feel that I could easily be stuck on v5 and not miss anything.

After v2 we got a few bug fixes each year and lots of new extra stuff that you can use or ignore... it just depends on how many more bugs you want to learn about.

Theordore Kruger points out that the PRV tools got messed up (a.k.a. improved) after v4 and when you watch him work in v4 it's pretty hard to disagree.

The audio process bugs in SONAR v2 that I work around each session are all still sitting there in X2.

I think X was the DAW that proved to me that you really don't need to upgrade until you actually really need to.

best regards,
mike

when you set up your m-audio in sonar; did you correct the latency?  or did you leave it as default?  default is WDM driver mode and m-audio typically works better with ASIO.

Good day luminaries...
*bUb LoOkS aRoUnD aNd SaYs*, Well ... I guess one of us can help you ...

Specs? Is it an old PC, or did you upgrade your entire DAW (PC/Windows)? I think the Delta 44 card is a PCI card IIRC. There are problems with the PCI slot being bridged on newer motherboards and they don't work well with PCI sound cards some times.
Would it be consensus here that Sonar 5.0 won't work on Win 7.0 ? Are any using 5.0 on Win 7.0 ?
I never used 5.0 ... but the problems you are experiencing are the same problems people complain about upstairs with X2 on brand new machines all the time. So I don't think upgrading to X2 with the hopes of correcting S/C&P is going to get you far.
Don't get me wrong as I have no prob upgrading. I just want to be sure that it's absolutely time to retire 5.0PE...just as I did all other versions since Cakewalk Home 3.0. Thank to all....
Here's my assessment. You like to own software and get to know it very well. X2 is such a radical change from the pre-X days, I personal think you are going to regret it. Workflow wise, and hardware wise trying to get it to run properly. How bug tolerant are you? There's a lot ... some folks don't mind working around them, and some of us do, and there's a lot of shimmy shaking to do.

The other things to consider ... X2 is basically the same engine underneath as 8.5. I don't know if 5.0 is the same as 8.5 ... but I'd be willing to bet that 90% or more of it is.

The other thing to consider is your VST's. If I remember correctly, 5.0 was 32bit only wasn't it? If you have 3rd party VST's that are as old as 5.0 ... you may run in to problems.

Sounds like you had a pretty solid DAW. Do you want to give up all of your toolbar customization entirely, get rid of Track Layers for Take Lanes that are pretty much unusable at this point due to bugs, color customization, re-learn every shortcut, learn how to use the Smart Tool instead of just clicking on options in the toolbar (they are all gone)? X2 is not the same Sonar you've been used to.

Well...coffee timej here

Middleman:
I'm not the power user that many here may be so 5.0PE worked well for me as long as I was on XP.
I really wanted to get the DAW to Win 7 (32bit works for me) and enter the 21st century.

Sharke:
Yep....I'm ready.  The only thing that kept me back was having the Win7 upgrade courage first.
Ha...hope you don't have any of these 'Rice Krispies' rearing their ugly little heads on your machine.

Craigb:
Your'e one version more archaic than me.
Ha...will advise on your financing request to 'enter the 21st century'

ProjectM:
Downloaded the demo last night.
I will do a quick test recording and if no Rice Krispies are there then the culprit is a Paleozoic Sonar 5.0 on Win 7.
I know there's a learning curve involved and hope I live long enough to get some use out of it.

mike_mccue:
Sonar 5.0PE did everything I needed and more.
I agree with your last phrase.....which I think I proved. :)

digi2ns:
Ok...not gonna fight it...especially since as my trusty M14 was confiscated. :)
Yeah...that was a long time ago in a land far away and I somehow survived and remain above the dirt to this day.
Thanks for the kind comment.

beagle:
Hmm...after running wave profiler (WDM) I did leave the m-audio as default at 5.8ms.
I thank you for that tip which I will confirm today.

Bub:
Your sense of humor is well in tact. :)
All your points are well received so I have my homework cut out for me today.

Thank you all for chiming in.
Just the stuff I was looking for.

Will advise as this day of experimentation/trial/error unfolds.

Carry on......(luminaries)
