I'm pretty happy about getting through all the hurdles/speed bumps when doing a major install/update.
No residual BS with the system to keep me awake at night.

I'm looking forward to digging deeper now.

It was a cold, snowy train ride I might add)

Perfect spelling! I can imagine that it was a lot of snow and very cold. It's great in the summer apparently. I have never taken the train ride over there. Maybe some day if I have business over there

I really can't justify updating my desktop DAW system further at this time but I decided to do a test recording anyway.
Opened a Sonar5.0 file anthology of all my songs (24), added/recorded (4) more tracks simultaneously to the existing (2) stereo tracks for over 1 hour and not a hiccup.
File saved as an X2 fine.
Of course, I'm not totally sure what that proves in the long haul.
So...not being the power user as others here what problems does this think tank expect me to experience running X2 on my below requirements DAW?

As a fail safe my laptop is somewhat new (DELL Intel Pentium (R) P6100 @ 2.0 ghz - 4gig ram 64bit) so I think of that as my alternative choice and go to a USB inferface if necessary.

Follow this guide: IMO I think it's best to have a system that is more than adequate (above host specs) if you want to run the latest SONAR and be able to run newer plugins (particularly CPU hogs) all without a sweat and be future proof for at least 5 years? Then I recommend; Fresh install latest O/S, drivers and host (in that order) but also just as important; you can get a top-notch DAW custom built starting at just $1,059 (not including new audio interface + SONAR) but it will include for example; 2 hard drives and a decent 3.6GHz CPU.... I recommend either Jim Roseberry or ADK, they will assist you every step of the way making sure you end up with a rock solid system that will run super-quiet, have really good quality components and no doubt be the best bang for the dollar.  You will not be disappointed.

No....few Vst's and maybe a dozen or audio tracks at most.
I continued my test phase on the 1 hour long recording of 4 tracks.
On each track I added an EQ/Comp/verb of random choices and started playback.
It's at 00:45 now and no fur balls or PMO's.

My first DAW I ordered from him back in 2000 or so.
You know what the hot specs were back then?....it was a PIII 600 mhz processor w/500 meg ram.:)

Still contemplating my path forward.

I'm back....

After my test phase (noted above) I just pulled the trigger on X2Producer box version.
Just got all the serial/reg #'s in the email.
What will be new and interesting to me is trying out Rapture/Dimension/Sonar 1-2 XL.
I totally unfamiliar with the sounds of Rapture & Dimension.
I wonder how they will compare (or intiquate) my Protues FX and MVS-1.

I'm now a 21st century guy and ready to pound down some jello and margaritas.

I started with Cakewalk 6.0 in the mid-90's on an AST computer I bought at Costco and used that until making the jump to Sonar 6.0 ... and then made a second jump to 8.5.  That 3 versions over roughly 18 years of using this product.

I think I'll wait 'til Y6 before I make my next jump.

I never took the train, but I rode on the hydrofoil.  I think we went from Stavanger up to Bergen in the summer of 1973.  That was fun and interesting.

quantumeffect.... I did every other version when Sonar came out being 1, 3 and 5. All versions served me quite well. But I wanted to get with Win7 and the X series for a couple reasons. Old55.... That hydrofoil ride does sound like fun. I'll check out that video. Sorry you missed the frigid Bergin trip. Thanks gents for commenting...

The are several reasons I wait so long before jumping.  When I moved from "Cakewalk" to Sonor I bought a Dell w/ a dual core processor.  When I moved to 8.5 I bought a Studio Cat.  My machines are stricly off-line and I just want them to be stable.  I quess you would call me a serious hobbyist and as such I want to turn on my gear and have it work ... I simply don't have the time or expertise to trouble-shoot software issues (8.5.3 seems really stable for what I do).

When I eventially move to X# there will probably be a new machine associated with the upgrade.

As of now, I don't think my Studio Cat Quad Core is obsolete (yes, I wait for my hardware to become obsolete too) and I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about X2 yet.
