+1 to Mike Senior's "Mixing Secrets" and Roey Izhaki's "Mixing Audio".  Both brilliant, and they compliment each other.

And another hearty +1 to both these titles.  I'd recommend reading Senior's book first ... it's a little less comprehensive and quicker to get through.  I'd also recommend planning to read them both a second time in a year or so.

The Izhaki book comes in Kindle format too.

Certainly an amusing read, but really not a good source of information for learning mixing techniques ... other than bits of wisdom like "don't do your final exports when stoned" and advice on how to avoid disputes with band member girlfriends.  Also, the author has a definite prejudice against non-analog gear.  That's what makes the Senior book so valuable.  He recognizes the limitations most home studio producers are faced with and offers his expertise accordingly.

Mixing Audio - Concepts, Practices and Tools by Roey Izhaki is an excellent choice of reference.

It can get a little heavy going, but there is very little missing from this book.

Another vote for this book. It is simply excellent and worth every penny. I also think it'll be the only one you need.

I agree. It's an excellent book. Comes with a DVD of sound samples as well so you can hear demonstrations of the effects he talks about.

As has been said, not any easy read, at least half of it went way over my head first time out, but I certainly don't regret buying it. I've been thinking recently that I should read this again as it's been a few years now, so hopefully some of that stuff will make more sense now.

Yes - good call Bub. I'd forgotten about all the audio examples on the DVD.

There's nothing more frustrating when learning than reading something being described without being able to actually hear it. With this the samples are referenced all the way through the book so you can actually hear exactly what is being written about at any point in the book. That alone makes it worth having.

Hey all... I was wondering if anyone knew of any good reading resources for dealing with various aspects of mixing.  Almost like a trouble shooting manual so to speak... For example.

1) My mix is too muddy what do I do
2) I have a ring in my snare drum, what do I d
3) How do I get a nice thud out of the kick drum
4) How do I get rid of extra bleed from the snare
5) My overall mix sounds dull
6) My instruments don't seem to blend well, they all sound isolated.

Things along those lines.  I have a general idea of what to do, but, my knowledge is not precise enough.

Hi Red,

Sorry I'm a little late here, but you're more than welcome to join my forum if you feel like it. I have quite a few awesome reads in my audio section of my forum and you can even post questions etc. It's not super busy or anything, but there are some really good reads on there that address exactly what you're asking for. It's free to join...you'll just need to wait for me to ok the sign-up which usually takes anywhere from a minute to a day tops. Everyone else is welcome also. Not trying to steal anyone from here, but any audio geeks or people that want to learn are more than welcome...as well as anyone else that just wants to tag along. :)
