"Every thing in moderation"

That's the line that the poison and additive makers want you to think makes "common sense".

If they can keep you below the toxicity level... they have a chance of keeping you as a customer.

I have been poisoned at big box restaurant salad bars before. The salad whitener that is routinely sprayed on the lettuce gives me a splitting headache almost immediately.

My favorite and most hearty healthy breakfast is: Becan n Eggs (eggs: organic, cage free).

That is 6 rashes of becon (thoroughly cooked) most of the fat cooked out and drained on paper-towels and 4 poached eggs + two slices of toast buttered of course. A little salt and cracked pepper. Love it.

The problem for one example is the heavy use of pesticides in foods. So bad that hazmat-suits are required when applying these pesticides.

If you want to eat healthier - Follow this guide:

Other facts; a lot of the flour used in main staple diets (breads, pasta, cakes, pastries) contains alloxan (toxic glucose analogue) and if pesticides are used? Oh well I guess that's quite a volatile mix. Symptoms: initially, serious digestive issues. Long Term: cancer, diabetes, heart problems. Recommend: Organic unbleached Flour.

Mike, am I remembering correctly that you are a vegetarian?

If so, what was the deciding factor in not eating meat - was it the 'cruelty' to animals motivation or the health aspect. Or a mixture. Or something else perhaps?

Ive been juicing and eatin raw vegetables for two weeks and drop 12 pounds. I pretty much have  been eating and juicing as much as I want. Not in moderation at all.

The first two days I had a headache and pooped like the dickens.

But that's behind me (literally and figuratively)  I feel great. Plus I been doing the treadmill daily. Can't wait for spring to run and bike. Plus I am in the Chicago marathon again this year.

I agree with Mike. Stay away from processed food. My wife and I plan on planting a big garden this spring. She's been on the same diet as myself and has lost even more weight than myself the last two weeks

I am gonna be ready in October for tis marathon!!!

Ps... Stay away from Bapu ... You don't know where he's been

There was a day when you could wash the fruits/vegetables and rid yourself of most of the pesticides.

Monsanto, one of the leaders in GMO, includes the pesticide in the seed. In fact, some of their GMO seeds are actually patented as pesticides;

My relatives, in Germany, say food manufacturers there have to list any GMOs in their products.

The United States has no such requirements. Rumsfeld, during the Bush administration had a big hand in stopping the call for GMO listing on food products.

Rumsfeld was a former employee of the Monsanto corporation. Scarry stuff.

Hi Steve,

Two things initially.

1) Family health history led me to learn about nutrition when I was young. I subsequently became horrified to learn how hard it is to acquire meat that is worth digesting.

2) Learning of the "Diet for a Small Planet" philosophy, which is a realization that all farmed meat protein that we eat is supported by an infrastructure that devotes 15-20 lbs of vegetable protein to produce one pound of animal protein. Being aware that a complete protein is available in dairy or vegetable form I came to understand that each meat meal one eats is the equal of 20 good meals that could be shared with the starving people of the world. It's not like my actions have an effect on the situation... but it made, and still makes, sense to me to live in such a way that there is more left for others to share.

I have practiced that lifestyle for 37 years now without any distractions.

At some point I realized that the cruelty we subject the animals too is beyond anything I want to be personally associated with. I really don't like the fact that most civilized people don't want to know where the farm meat comes from yet they still support the system and love to make fun of people who have made the decision I made.

I became a vegetarian for selfish reasons... but now, after many years of reflection, I know that I will never be able to feel ok about selfishly eating an farm raised animal.

I still recommend meat. Good clean meat is good wholesome food. I get along great with food hunters and fishermen and we discuss their craft with respect.

I'm just not into it any more myself.

I'm into whole foods that haven't been messed with. It's hard to find food like that unless you make specific choices about where you shop and how much you pay. For me it's pretty much the 2nd most important thing so I'm willing to do what I do.

all the best,
mike

Thanks Mike.

I rarely eat red meat and processed red meat. Occasionally I eat lean pork steaks, but mostly it's chicken (breast) and fish.

Mostly for my health, although I've never much liked eating fat and grease anyway!

Actually after you have a heart attack, meat will not seem to be the same. Afterall, all they do is make it taste good to hook anyone on it. Chicken and fish good enough. Vegetables and Beans, beans, beans. (although lately for protein I been not having more than probably 2-3 oz. of meat a day. Have to get back on a different eating habit. Potatoes are good.
